Assignment: Earth…The Series

It is well known that TOS’s "Assignment: Earth" was originally a pilot concept from Gene Roddenberry for a show centering on the character of Gary Seven. This week’s Friday Night Movie is a glimpse at a possible opening theme for that show…

This was created by musician and school teacher Andy Patterson (with help from his brothers Michael and Phillip). Andy wrote the music for the theme and recorded the original music using real live musicians. Big thanks to Daren Dochterman for introducing me to Andy and this great vid. Visit Andy’s Gary Seven Website where there is more info.

Here is the ‘jazzier, sexier’ version:

  1. Awesome!! Gary Seven is the James Bond of STAR TREK!

  2. Reminds me of The Man From UNKLE. The music is spot-on! I’d swear it was from the sixites!

  3. Too cool for school! Love it. Man it triggered a memory of mine back in the 80s. I was visiting a friend at their college in the Malibu area. We took a trip to Disneyland and on one of the rides a we went there were two couples a few seats behind. One of the women was Terri Garr. What a fun ride hearing her yells in the background.;)

Well in some parallel earth this series probably happened. Too bad not ours. Fun episode of TREK though.

  4. Einstein said there were only 47 people in the universe. Lansing looks a lot like Peter Weller - or vice versa. He looked more comfortable flying a B17 back in the day. Nice job by the Patterson Brothers.

  5. Pretty cool stuff.

Kind of makes you wonder how Star Trek history would be different today if Gary 7 got his own program.

  6. Ive always wanted to hear Teri Garr scream…moan…whatever lol. I was a friskly lad back then lol

  7. I loved the Khan series of TOS novels, particularly how Gary Seven and Roberta were featured alongside Khan himself. They’re the only Trek novels I’ve ever read (apart from one Voyager novel by Jeri Taylor). This would have made for a very entertaining series had it been picked up by NBC.

  8. Heh, for some reason the openings reminds me of a 1980s style series. And who knows it could have worked.

  9. Great stuff ! This reminds me of a story that I think would have made a great episode for the “Assignment: Earth” series. In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds III, the story “The Aliens Are Coming!” deals with Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln meeting up with Captain Christopher (”Tomorrow is Yesterday”). Gary Seven and Roberta act as Men in Black in this story, which even ties in the Ferengi “invasion” of Roswell, NM, from the Deep Space Nine episode “Little Green Men.”

There are some scenes in the opening videos that show Robert Lansing fighting some security guards, etc…Where did these scenes come from?

  10. This is a hint! JJ Abrams isn’t planning a new Star Trek movie, that’s just a smokescreen. It’s really a film about Gary Seven using his transport machine to go into the Nexus and….

    …wait for it…

    BRING BACK KIRK!!!!!

Remember, you heard it here first. ;-)

Actually, I’ve had these videos on my Youtube Favorites list for quite a while. Excellent use of shots from Assignment: Earth. They are very cool little glimpses of what might have been. Fun, fun stuff!

  11. Now if they would only bring back Questor

    Posted by Gary | August 3, 2007, 5:48 pm
  12. That was at least as cool as “It Takes a Thief.”

    If only… if only….

  13. Yeah there’s a few of these on you tube-

The one with the jazzy theme and no voice over is really cool!

However, I was deeply disturbed by the one that features the Friends theme and font. Worlds Colliding!

Nitpick: Star Trek TOS Font not lookie so good without a Space or a StarShip.

Otherwise, kudos and thanks to the creators.

  14. The first clip could’ve been from season 1 / ‘68-’69 Season, & the second clip from the ‘69-’70 season and thru the end of the series.

Very Cool Concept! I would’ve watched it.

  15. That was fan-frickin-tastic. Perfectly conceptualized, great execution, wonderful editing and the music was spot-on. Kudos and compliments all around.

Its a shame Robert Lansing wasn’t a bigger star. He really had a great quiet intensity and charisma. He was ***superb*** in one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes, with Mariette Hartley, which I believe was called “The Long Morrow”. And a great late career turn as the spy chief Control on the Edward Woodward series “The Equalizer” (itself with a great opening theme I believe by The Police’s drummer Stewart Copeland).

Hopefully “Assignment: Earth - the Series” was a big hit on Earth-2.

  16. You know, it was partly inspired by It Takes a Thief. At least the second theme was. That kind of vibe is what I was going for on the second jazzier theme. Robert Wagner was so cool. It has long been my assertion that “Thief” was the show the networks opted for instead of Assignment: Earth. We endeavored real hard to cop as close to the sixties as possible. I however like the first one I wrote more. I can SEE this show happening, as if it did. Thanks for the comments. As for JJ Abrams doing a Gary Seven movie. That’d be great. Especially if they pay me to use my theme and let me write the incidental stuff inside the movie. Are you listening JJ? Call me. Hey Daren thanks while I’m thinking about it.

  17. Nicely done. I was always disappointed that Teri Garr pooh-poohed Star Trek in interviews.

  18. fantastic! nice editing:) perfect 60’s type music, Could have brought in a big demographic and possible could have helped star trek in the ratings if more TOS visits to the new series

  23. And to answer Steve Johnson’s post from a few above…..if you remember Mr. Seven fights Spock, Scotty and some crew men in the original episode. Trouble is, the transporter control console is in the way the whole time. My brother Michael expertly created more of a body for Seven and superimposed in some guards for him to fight complete with a flickering flaming torch on the dungeon wall. You know G7 would be in a dungeon some time as a spy. I thought it worked quite well.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  24. G7: (tied to a wire basket)”Do you expect me to talk?”

Khan: (opening a large trap door with boiling oil) “No, Mr Seven, I expect you to fry”

  25. Honestly, could this be started as a series today. Imagine it, Gary 7 and Roberta Lincoln in today’s world. With link to teh Star Trek Universe…I think it would be a good thing…maybe three seasons on Newwork TV and two more on Sci-Fi.

Posted by Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP | August 3, 2007, 9:41 pm
  26. Network TV is evil. We get to glimpse great shows, then they screw the best ones to death (West Wing was almost an exception, until they canned Sorkin for having ’shrooms) : FireFly Sports Night, The Tick (both of them), Greg the Bunny… the list is endless - and oh yeah, STTOS!

SciFi would be a better bet from the get go, in my unhumble opinion.

Love the themes and the animations and the cool graphics!

At what windmill wilt thou tilteth next, Mr. Patterson??

  27. What a great video, it certainly plays like a 60’s title opener. If I didn’t know better I’d swear the theme was from the 60’s! Wonderfully done. You know, if Gene Roddenberry had something like it to show NBC it certainly could have helped the potiential series chances.

Ditto everyone’s admiration for the Khan novels, as well as “Assignment Eternity” also by Greg Cox.

Posted by Thomas Jensen | August 3, 2007, 10:03 pm
  28. Not bad at all. They should actually consider this as a series on some network. It’s a way to exploit Roddenberry and it would certainly have a lot of interest. Obviously, it would be recast, and could be set in 2007, but it wasn’t a bad idea at all.

    Posted by StillKirok | August 3, 2007, 10:09 pm
  29. Wow, that was awesome. I just assumed the music was borrowed from some other 60s series. I’m blown away that it’s completely original and made just for this.

  30. alright. Let’s all petition the powers that be with that idea

  33. This would make a great series on TV now, and I have the cast for it:

    Gary Seven: Kiefer Sutherland

    Roberta Lincoln: Elisha Cuthbert

Hell, this character’s better than Jack Bauer any day.

Posted by Neville Ross | August 4, 2007, 1:01 am
  34. The music for this video could also be used for a X-Men TV show in the 60’s as well.

  35. I have to say I didn’t think much of the video: the stop-start effect was annoying.

  38. Thanks again Andy, goos stuff.

You forced me to go look up everything I could on this series

So Gary would have been working for group of [alien] time agents (The Aeges) fighting a time war of sorts? His computer also would have let him travel through time and set things right on earth.

In the hands of this one man…
could rest the future of all mankind.
    His name…Gary Seven…
born in the year 2319 A.D.
The only survivor of Earth’s attempt
to send a man back through time to today.
    Assignment…fight an enemy
who is already here, trying to destroy us.
If he fails…there’ll be no tomorrow!

So he definitely would have been from Kirk’s future. Cool..

  39. Great music — captures the tone perfectly! The video was well done, too, though the stop-motion effect was perhaps a little over-used for my tastes. Wonderful concept!
Only thing that perhaps could be improved in “G7 2.0″: Perhaps the title card for “Assignment:Earth” could be larger. All the 60’s shows I remember had the titles full screen — not many 50″ screen back then, perhaps. But I love the TOS font. Great stuff!

  40. Ah, the music evokes memories of Lalo Schifrin’s work, particularly on the “Bullitt” score. I love that acid jazz genre.

  44. “These are all live musicians except for synthetic harpsichord and bass guitar.”

Really? regarding the first clip: I noticed the harpsichord was from a sampled source right away which led me to read the article . I thought it was very well done and 60s sounding but the clarinet / brass descending in semitones sounded typically sampled to me, especially the brass round about the 00:19. In other words, the same sampled note played back slower and faster like on most GM modules etc.

Don’t like to be critical because it was still good, just wondered why it said all real musicians. I suppose you could argue that real musicians were used to record the original single note samples, but that would be stretching it a bit!

    Well done anyway.

    Posted by non-fanatic | August 4, 2007, 8:41 am
  45. Nothing was sampled. All original. May have sounded like typical stuff that was sampled. That was by design. The harpshichord is just a synthesized sound. I didn’t feel like scaring up a real harpsichord. Just a chromatic figure. In ’60’s spy music you had to have a harpsichord and bongos. As to the brass sounding sampled…real….I promise you. I played on it.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 4, 2007, 8:56 am
  46. I definitely prefer the first one. Very cool.

Poor Gene R., unable to get a single pilot picked even AFTER the syndicated success of Star Trek. The Questor Tapes, Gensis 2 and Planet Earth all come immediately to mind.

Okay, well it was very well done.

    Andy wrote:
    “Nothing was sampled. All original.”

Just to be clear, I wasn’t talking about what people these days think sampling is, IE, nicking a few of bars from someone else’s work, I was talking about what most sound modules and keyboards have used for years to reproduce instrument sounds that you play yourself on the keyboard — like your hapsichord sound.

    Andy wrote:
“In ’60’s spy music you had to have a harpsichord and bongos.”
Yes, I always liked that. Not a spy program but Columbo often had a harpsichord in there somewhere as well.

    Posted by non-fanatic | August 4, 2007, 1:31 pm
  49. Well again,….all of the instruments were real instruments. That was part of the fun of it. Using a live orchestra like what was being done in that era. I like to imagine these guys just got off the road with bands like Goodman, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Charlie Barnett and the like and segued into studio work. In fact, that’s part of the instruction i gave the players. “Imagine you’re in your late 50’s, early 60’s and you’re now a studio guy doing TV shows and elevator music all day - and this is one of the fun sessions.” Real trumpets, trombones, flute, clarinet, sax, string section, etc. The only synthetic instruments were again, the harpsichord and bass guitar.

And thanks for the nice words.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 4, 2007, 2:19 pm
  50. I’m glad Andy is getting more attention on this… when he first emailed me and showed me this, I was bowled over. We showed it at one of our panels at Comic-Con and it was met with thunderous applause… Great job, Andy.

Posted by Daren Doc | August 4, 2007, 2:24 pm
  51. Hey, Daren. You’re the best. Thanks for, as Adam said, “spreading the word”(Way to Eden). Good meeting you finally in person the other night at Comic con by the way. Thanks again.

  53. I have no news on any HD TMP project whatsoever. I wish I did. But it’s out of my hands until I’m informed otherwise.

Posted by Daren Doc | August 4, 2007, 3:52 pm
  54. Thanks Double D - Methinks it will be quite lame if they release TMP in HD with that heavy grain. As it is TMP played on my HD DVD player (upconverted to 1080i) brings out so much grain that it actually looks better on a low res dvd player.

  55. Andy — Masterful job. I watch a lot of old movies on TCM, and it is amazing how certain instruments defined the scores of the films of that era — I especially liked the harpsicord and flute in your pieces. Great theme — really, really nice, evocative job on the whole she-bang. I wish some producer would have the foresight to look backward and make a show that has the look and feel and SOUND of a late sixties drama.

Never mind what never was — you really show what could be done now! Thanks for sharing that with us.

    Scott B. out.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 4, 2007, 5:35 pm
  57. Andy, speaking (writing) as someone who studied composition at University I am impressed. It was always my dream to film score. Every hero of yours that you mentioned, I would include in my list (with Williams at the top). I really liked the mixed meter on the first theme. Was that 6/8 followed by 3/4 and then repeated? I also liked theme two. I really liked how you timed the “collage” images of the different characters in the intro with the character’s themes: Bass for Gary 7, harps for Isis and flute for Roberta. Nice work.

    Posted by William | August 4, 2007, 5:51 pm
  58. William, I too studied composition. My father was a music composition professor. No, actually the first theme is in 3/4 except for the bridge and then goes back into the 3/4 after the bridge. To be fair it sounds like mixed meter so that’s astute of you. To help the musicians feel it I conducted it in in 6/8 and sudivided every 3,4,5 measure. Breaking it up into 123,123,12,12,12. Again, a 6/8 feel with emphasis on different beats. The complex meter gives the song a more complex feel, befitting a truly superior show, character, and concept. This again, was my favorite theme. It’s also the theme, most people, Daren Dochterman included liked best. Makes sense he’s a musician himself.

The second theme was, admittedly, bubblegum, popcorn - more fluff and fun for a lighter approach to the show. My thought is the network would try to sell Lansing’s sexy side to appeal to a broader audience. Hence a sexier theme.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 4, 2007, 6:29 pm
  59. I really liked the shifting meter feel. It reflects the unceratin times of the ’60s so it was a nice choice compositionally. I hope that you aren’t selling yourself short on theme 2. It is more mainstream but musically I think that it still has a lot going for it. I really like how the character’s “voices” are so clear. You lay them out from the very begining. Prokofiev would be proud :-).

    Posted by William | August 4, 2007, 6:51 pm
  60. Ha, me and Prokofiev. His Romeo and Juliet motives and my Gary Seven, Roberta, and Isis themes. Ha,..that’s funny. Thanks.

  61. Actually I was thinking Peter and the Wolf. I still remember being shown that in school. Speaking of which, do you teach music? I have my Bachelors in music and have thought about going back for my Masters so I can teach.

    Posted by William | August 4, 2007, 7:12 pm
  62. I’m signing off for now It was good to chat. Again, I really like the themes. Thanks for sharing them.

    Posted by William | August 4, 2007, 7:19 pm
  63. Yes,………..I’m a public school music teacher. Thanks again for getting what we’re doing, liking it, and I’m glad it affected you in a positive way. I don’t know where you are but you don’t have to have a masters to teach unless you’re looking at a college. And even then………..

I want my “The Invaders!” DVD. Now THAT got me wide-eyed when I was young.

    Posted by Driver | August 4, 2007, 9:26 pm
  65. Don’t remember Invaders. I personally project that Assignment: Earth would have made three seasons. Possible fourth year but that year would have looked tired and started to get too groovy. I’ve got music in my head of how it would have come back from commercial, a Gary Seven love theme, a softer sexier Roberta theme, mischievous Isis the cat music….lots more where that came from……………..it would have been great. it still could be great.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 4, 2007, 10:00 pm
  66. Well, I just had a peek at something that will definitely have only one season. The new Flash Gordon on Sci-Fi. Makes the movie from 1981(?) look like a masterpiece. And it’s what J.J. should see as to know how not to re-do a series.

  69. Do you remember the theme to Scarecrow and Mrs. King? That was one of my favourites in the Male/female epsionage/spy/detective genre. It was really playfull and like your theme 2, the characters were represented by their own mini theme.

  70. OK.

So we have Andy’s great music here. And yeah Lalo Schifferin (sp?) great inspiration. It reminded me a bit of It takes a thief. (mentioned earlier)

    Just blue skying here-
With Andy’s Music, and Darren Dochterman’s exceptional visual arts talents. and Plenty of footage from Assignment Earth, 12 O’Clock High, and (others) Is is possible to come up with a longer teaser?

Or perhaps (perhaps) The New Voyages team could have a spinoff? I mean, given that they are bringing Harry Mudd back next year- Gary Seven would be a cool extension of their bring it back theme.

    Off topic:

Darren, PS, EXCEPTIONAL work on TMP. I’ve had friends that had previously hated that movie, who really gave it a second looks thanks to the edits/efforts of your team. Next time, please go in and fix the Space PJ’s (Except for Admiral Kirk’s that one was kind of cool)

  71. Andy and I have been talking about pooling our talents and coming up with a longer teaser or something… stay tuned. :)

  72. As for getting Mr. Seven back into action……………I spoke to James Cawley about that at Comic Con and suggested just that thing for a new New Voyages episode. I also offered my services. I’d love to have my theme used and to write music for the episode itself. Since it has it’s own theme and title sequence maybe it could be a spin off of New Voyages, a different branch of their work. And Daren could help on that one too. We could do a lot with Daren. Some made mention of our stop motion style earlier. That really was out of necessity. Again not much live action footage exists. We made up what you see. Think what could be done with a whole team on it.

  73. And hey Daren,…I’m there. I’m watching an eleven and a half month old right now and just reading posts here. If nothing else I’d love to expand, build upon what we did.

  74. Uh, Hey Man, that was like far out and groovy. But what about Gary Three? He was my favorite. And wasn’t that girl who played the cat the same chick who played Tonto’s mother in the horsey scene in episode #32 of The Lone Ranger? You know, the one with the big fat Albino! Wadaya got Gary Eight back there?

  75. I am amazed that there is so much conversation on this board. Way to go Andy! I loved your music. Especially the piccolo.

    She must be good!

  76. Yeah,…one of the best musicians on the project, probably in her town too.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 5, 2007, 2:57 pm
  77. #15:
Yes you’re right. I’m a BIG fan of the Equalizer and the theme music was composed and performed by The Police’s drummer Stewart Copeland(who even appears in one of the episodes). Copeland’s music was essential in setting the mood of the series; the thoughtful combination of synths and strings really made the soundtrack stand out for me.
Robert Lansing’s acting as “Control” in this series was superb. He added much to what already was a classy show, featuring the immense talents of Edward Woodward as the Equalizer.

  78. well if you guys do make another, i would like to see credits for Barbara Babcock as the voice of the Beta 5 and Victoria Vetri as Isis….and maybe throw in some other random actor of the era to fill out the cast

Posted by Anthony Pascale | August 5, 2007, 5:45 pm
  79. Andy, Darren

Yes, indeed - Please do this. I’m sure Anthony P can provide enough backstory about Gary Seven to really flesh out such project.

Hell, I’d fly to Cawley’s NY stages, suit up as the 60’s equivalent of a red shirt and PAY for all the HD Tape they need just to support this effort.

Thanks again for the teaser Andy.

  80. Now there’s a ringing endorsement. I saw Barbara Babcock in the lobby of a hotel about 15 years ago. I’ve always loved her. Anthony makes mention of Victoria Vetri who played the human version of Isis the cat. For those interested check out some pictures of her on the web in her day. Va va voom.

Posted by Andy Patterson | August 5, 2007, 8:24 pm
  81. Anthony,….you know Babcock did the growls, and vocalizations of the cat too Though I doubt in that day and age that they’d have given her credit due for that.

  82. Interesting. I was just thinking recently that a series based on Gary Seven’s time on earth could make an interesting new Star Trek series. Little did I know all it was Roddenberry’s plan. They brought ‘Earth Final Conflict’ and ‘Andromeda’ back, why not this.

    Posted by Tassieboy | August 5, 2007, 9:46 pm
  83. Heck, yeah, instead of another Star Trek series, Paramount/whatever should consider this… if the Star Trek movies do well, maybe some sort of tie in.. :-)

“You know, it was partly inspired by It Takes a Thief. At least the second theme was. That kind of vibe is what I was going for on the second jazzier theme. Robert Wagner was so cool.”

Great work, Andy! You captured a solid, late sixties feel, and you can never go wrong being inspired by Dave Grusin’s brilliant, ever-loved themes for “It Takes a Thief.” Really sweet theme!

“IAs for JJ Abrams doing a Gary Seven movie. That’d be great. Especially if they pay me to use my theme and let me write the incidental stuff inside the movie. Are you listening JJ? Call me. Hey Daren thanks while I’m thinking about it. ”

That’s the odd thing about Gary Seven’s plot–other Roddenberry series were produced after his passing, but i’m really surprised no one (aside from a few novels) ever tried to develop what would have become a Gary Seven series. Since Seven’s encounter with Kirk and Co. was a one-time event, a production company could move ahead without the worry of licensing issues over the Trek characters….

  86. For anyone still looking at this/these comments, I thought I should mention one important part of this project. We had all the images, an idea of what to do with them, but not really the equipment or expertise to do it. The music is my forte. It really fell into place when I found a very talented editor who was able to do what I saw and wanted for the look. He is a guy named Bill Davies who not only understood the concept but was often one step ahead of me in what I was thinking. Bill’s a talented guy and he is also the world’s leading authority on the only live action movie Dr. Seuss worked on called the 5000 fingers of Dr. T. It became a passion of his that took over much like my Assignment; Earth project. Too bizarre to even explain here but here’s Bill’s website for any interested or already in the know about this movie. http://hometown.aol.com/seivadj18/5000fingers.html.

  87. Great period stuff! Hey, does anyone remember that great show that was cancelled before its time (sounds familiar doesn’t it) called “Search”. I loved that show and still remember it’s TV theme.

  88. Nifty-Neat P-Brothers! I give it a full-F! F for f****** Great! By the way, those bars look alot like the ones behind that old theater in New York, that Frank Gorshin had installed to keep this creepy guy that followed him around town to town and asked for another photo of him, out of his way while he smoked. Is that them?

    Other than that…dig it man!

  89. I hear the specific sound of Neal Shotwell, the great jazz drummer from Abilene. And is that a basson thrown in there too?

  90. Hey Andy, this is Kim. Keith sent me the link. Too bad us old farts from the sixties don’t have sense enough to do things like this. BTW, got any coll ideas for the Prisoner? It’s always been my favorite freaky 60’s show. Take care.

Posted by Kim McLeroy | August 7, 2007, 4:19 pm
  91. Thanks Kim. Ah, The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan was Number 6. But do you remember who was Number 1? Good show. Thanks again.

  92. Wow… this sounds great. Especially those instruments being recorder through that AKG 2000 B Condenser. I think the bongos are great, too. But seriously Andy, congratulations on the hype. This is great. Let me know when it’s time to record the next theme.

  93. Reading this stream of comments has definitely been the most fun I’ve had in some time! Bravo Andy - I told you the themes were good! Thanks for sharing all of this with everyone.
