  1. See, now THAT’s a promo! “Most ruthless enemy ever…” I love hyperbole!
    I love this episode.
Can’t wait to see Galloping Gothos.

  2. I love hyperbole a million times more than anyone in history has ever dared love anyone or anything!!!

  3. I’m looking forward to seeing how they improve the chase of the Big E by the planet. As I recall, the poor old planet had stars visible through it on occasion…

  4. At least I can say they had tongue firmly planted in cheek when they called Liberace — er, excuse me, Trelane — the “most ruthless enemy ever.” What a big middle finger to guys like Khan, Kor, and Kang that would have been.

  5. Anthony, you are the best! Thanks so much!

  6. The bloopers for this episode are terrific, especially when The Shat responds to Trelane’s “Are you challenging me to a DUEL?!” question. Who knew his voice could go so high?

  7. OK, I’m slow.
I knew Trelayne’s mom was voiced by Barbara Babcock, who also appeared as Mea 349 in “A Taste of Armageddon” and Philana in “Plato’s Stepchildren.” (and Grace in Hill Street Blues)
I did not know until now that Babcock voiced Commander Loskene and Isis the cat.
    Ha! Still learning their tricks.

  8. … I was wondering … There’s no listing for TURNABOUT INTRUDER … will CBS-Digital redo the last of the ST TOS ?

  12. This is one of the better TOS episodes…great sets and costumes, great story and great acting all around.

I’m looking forward to seeing the remastered version of this episode.

  13. I think Trelane was the first gay character in Trek.

  14. “I think Trelane was the first gay character in Trek.”

Its all just this side of Liberace to me-

ESPECIALLY when Trelane sits at the Harpsichord.

    Apropos of this-
Does that make Koloth the first Gay Klingon?

  15. One of my earliest memories of Star Trek was going to my uncle’s house in Houston where Star Trek showed regularly, and seeing this episode.

My uncle came in the room and said…”Man, I can’t believe Liberace is still on the air!”

One has to admit that of one tunes in at just the right time…”You will your brother George was there!”

As for gay…Liberace, no doubt. But Trelane…if all things are even about energy beings…has no genitals nor sex drive.

  16. Bill Campbell’s Liberace-esque take on Trelane reminds me of Johnny Depp’s Capt. Sparrow, based so heavily on Kieth RIchards.

    It’s another Trek classic.

  18. Mmmm…I might be wrong, but in the preview the new planet looks yellowish…and a fine yellowish planet it is too…but the stagey sky backdrops are GREEN in this episode…

  19. There is a great exampel of how Star Trek planets were made at this gem of a site…

    http://www.startrekhistory.com/restoration/SFX.html

Saddly, it looks like the colorful plantets everyone is clamouring about are really teh same globe with various hues and shades. In fact, it looks to be the globe from “Bread and Circuses.”

This is a very good site that even shows deleted scenes and reconstucts them from dialog.

There is a “lost” Lincoln and Kirk shot…and some more stuff.

Posted by Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP | July 21, 2007, 1:04 pm
  20. The antique “dueling pistols” actually seem to be Thompson Contenders — a modern (well, at the time, but they’re still being sold) single shot pistol.

    Fascinating.

  21. #19 Major Joe….

Thanks for that link…Wow what an amazing and interesting site for those interested in the history of TOS, and the stories behind the special effects.

I especially like all the information about “The Cage”, on of my all time favorite TOS episodes.

Thanks again for the link. That site should be required viewing for all TOS Trek fans!

Thanks for the compliment. I found that site last night while I was browsing Memory Alpha and I was litterally speechless when I saw some of the stuff. I liked the segment that decribed the shooting model and showed its various configurations. It’s proof to me that the USS Enterprise has lots of life left in it.

I wish some of those deleted scenes coudl be found and restored for the DVD release.

Yes, I’ve been there. Star Trek: The Restoration

    > Saddly…

Sadly? Well, that’s an opinion. I think it was ingenious.

    > …it looks like the colorful plantets everyone is clamouring about are

Well, the example at the Restoration site makes no mention of the planets seen in early first season episodes (planets with swirling clouds and a light side and dark side to the planet) nor does it make mention of those TOS planets with discernable land features (hey, that reminds me of the planet in Spock’s Brain that had land features and glaciers, too).

Ingenious as it was and keeping with “Color Set Television Ethos” of the 1960s, it is disingenuous to knock the Remasters representing Class M planets demanding “colorful” worlds when it is the “ethos” of our times to try to present scientifically realistic inhabitable planets.

Talos IV? An airbrush of the Earth’s own moon… Most other planets, a globe with a filter.

Colorful planets are normally “Gas Giants” with different levels of methane and other such gases.

The most you can expect in terms of a colorful CLASS M planet is a discolored ocean reflecting a different color sky…most likely green. Or, of the sort that might be desert…like Vulcan…that would be brownish subdued red. Not the intense red of the Original Series un-enhanced.

Greenhouse Planets, like Venus, would be White with some shadow areas. Others that lack weather or athmosphere, would look like the Moon or Mercury. Tinted only slightly.

Swirling Psychedelic planets would be like the Jovian moon IO…volcanic with sulpher clouds and variosu deposits.

Thus, in modern Trek…be it TOS-R, ENT, TNG or the MOVIES, colorful planets are not likely ones that could be landed on or visited by a langing party.

  25. I’m no great fist at physics, but I don’t think the color of the ocean has anything to do with the the color of the planet.

    http://mb-soft.com/public/earthblu.html

    Or not.

    Posted by GNDN | July 22, 2007, 2:02 am
  26. Oceans reflect the colour of the sky…thus, if the sky is green…the oceans will appear green and the landforms will have a slight green tint to them. It would not be as drastic an effect.

After all, we have a blue sky here on earth, yet there is no “blue” hue over everything.

Who’s knocking the redone planets in the Remastered TOS? Not I. However, knocking the planet effects of the 1960’s is not the way to do it. As for “ethos”, err… I will leave that for social scientists to ponder. There is a difference between art and science, and though TOS had a science advisor, there was also art in its production. But I digress…

There are lots of people knocking the Remastered Planets on this board…saying they look to earth-like and some are “boring google earth” like numbers.

My opinion is, if your watching the 1960s version…the Planets are of the design based on that decade’s effects. If you are watching the Remastered version, then the planets should be set to the realism of todays standards.

Posted by Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP | July 22, 2007, 10:54 am
  29. I was rather disappointed with CBS digital this time around and hoped for more from this remaster. Gothos looked cool, i liked the lightning flashes, but they could have cleaned up the many teleport effects - like ad a wave of energy or glow or something, but no… just jumpcut POP and they’re gone like usual. What also could have been cool is when Kirk shot Trelane’s mirror they could have replaced the drab-looking machinery inside with something more alien or high-tech looking. The remastering budget must be faltering.

    Posted by Pox | July 22, 2007, 9:53 pm
  30. I wonder if they’ve added any little enhancement to the hokey handphaser beams that Trelayne fires, this time?

    #29 Pox

I too would have liked to have seen something a little more “advanced-looking” behind the mirror… Oh, well, onto the next one I suppose.
