Love this scene. It’s not that it’s BAD Roddenberry, as some have suggested. It’s that it’s an echo of a Twilight Zone type ending. In ‘68, that was still way cool.
And if you don’t like the Shat’s delivery, turn on the tube and you’ll get to listen to Darth Vader’s delivery on this 4th of July.

On a side note, I saw Live Free or Die Hard last night at a 10:00pm show. There was a huge line for Transformers. The 4th of July movie weekend begins and continues.

Not a film I plan to see as I am not a fan. But I was curious how it will do and how well it is recieved by the Transformers fan base. Also curious how the fans react to the way the writers adapted the material. On a movie site thread, they felt it was hit and miss. Good action, but too much focus on the human characters at times who are little more then 2D characters and not enough on the Transformers, or wrong focus.

Nothing wrong with this scene as presented. Who needs subtlety? Shatner has a way with speeches. Call it corny if you want, but a good message.

I was in one of those long lines for Transformers …I have all the faith in Abrahms but after seeing Transformers I have to admit I’m more than a little concerned about Trek. As far as this speech goes, sure a little over the top, but I can lay that at the feet of the director because Shatner’s “risk is out business” speech is great. Like Meyer said in one of his commentaries, you just have to know how to get what you want out of the man. Happy 4th , make it a safe one.

Hey, I just went on ShatnerVision and the Shat, in a video, says he doesn’t mind if you call him SHAT as long as it’s preceded by a SIR!!? Wow, I’ve heard of Sir Lancelot, but Sir Shatalot? That surname sounds like a remark you make after eating too many prunes. “How were the prunes?” Answer: “Oh fine, but last night, boy,…I shat a lot!”

As A Canadian, who was so proud as a child to know the William Shatner was Canadian, and proud that he was on such a great show making a moving speech, the scene was not just moving for what it symbolized on the show but also that the Shat could go to the U.S. and become who he has become, an icon- It great, and Happy Birthday America- You are a great nation-warts and all.

Almost as powerful as hearing the national anthme.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties
to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.

He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

Great scene. Sure it may be in a bit of a cheesy scifi context, but the way the words spill out with the meaning for all it does send chills. Also I like the music that is in with it. I really hope the new TREK film works in some of the elements of the original series. I would love to see them on the big screen. The music, the mood, the characters all integrated into stories the make you feel all the emotional beats! Also on this day which is ending here is too those framers of the constitution, their sacrifice and to all the men and women that serve in the military and civil services HAPPY FOURTH!!! and thank you for what you have done and what you are doing. I saw Transformers, went with some people who really wanted to see it…I thought it was really entertaining. As good as they could have done, given that it’s based on a bunch of toys and a cheaply-made cartoon/toy commercial.

The kid who plays the main character (”Sam”) is terrific. He can run around, get shot at, and be funny. He’ll be great as Indiana Jones’ son.

And the girl who plays his girlfriend in the movie is smokin’ hot!

Also - the preview for the J.J. Abrams movie was shown, it went over very well and looks like a fun sci-fi disaster flick. And the trailer for the Simpsons movie was hilarious, too.

Let’s face it….Star Trek owes a HUGE debt to William Shatner. Since the show was larger than life, he played it LARGER THAN LIFE!!! Just picture any other “average” actor in the part and you’ll have your answer. The Shat may have been self-centered, and stolen scenes from co-stars, but with hindsight, he paved a legacy that will NEVER be forgotten!!! Long live the SHAT!!!

I find it more than interesting that BOTH fictional characters are portrayed by Canadians since the United States has ten times the population of Canada. Does this mean that Canadian actors are more well-versed in playing “larger than life” characters, or maybe, just maybe, the men of Canada are also made of “the right stuff”, and it’s not just indigenous to the U.S.A?

26-wow I didn’t know that. I have occasionally thought that Keifer Sutherland would have made a good Kirk. He’s too old to play a young Kirk now. But I think he’s a good enough actor to have pulled it off nicely.

As a conservative/libertarian/constitutionalist, it is not only my right to criticize ANY government official who violates their oath of office, it’s my duty. And I’m sure you didn’t mean to imply that we don’t have a right to free speech on the day we celebrate our independence, did you? And as long as we are on the subject (my apologies, Anthony, I’ll drop it after this), regarding your comments in #14, the troops are not fighting for our freedoms. If you believe that, I have a bridge for sale. They are fighting for Empire and the New World Order. (And I’m not anti-military; my father was in the Marines, I was in the Marines, and my son got out of the Army about 6 months ago after 2 tours in Iraq. I respect the fact that this is your site, and have no problem playing by your rules. Still, just out of curiosity, what is exactly is the problem with posters making political comments, anyway, so long as they aren’t abusive? TOS was a very politcal show for its time, so it’s a pretty natural subject to come up.

#20–Criticizing our leaders because you care about the results of their policies is the hallmark of a patriot and good citizen, regardless of which political party you belong to or whatever day on the calendar that criticism happens to fall on. And Jack, Kirk knocked Soran on his ass to get immediate access to a destructive device. He didn’t strap him into a chair to tape electrodes to his body or waterboard him in the hopes of getting information. So your comparison is, at best, quite a reach.

It has been said that in polite company (of which I am obviously not one) one does not engage in discussions of either politics or religion.

There are always varying points of view on this website… political… sociological… Trek-o-logical… Anthony’s admonitions aside… however…

America is not about the miss-steps… America is not about the mistakes we’ve made (and yes, they are abundant)… America is not about what we’ve done wrong…

Those things are attributable to a United States… A group of, oft times, disparate and difficult entities trying to find commonality and cohesiveness.

America has and always will be to me what we aspire to… what we hope for… what we toil to create and make provident for our children and our neighbors… very much like Star Trek… and if Roddenberry’s dream comes true, they will no longer be our neighbors… they will simply be “us”… “we”… “you and I.”
