Cloverfield Teaser Update
We have another follow-up on the rumors of a JJ Abrams teaser trailer running with Transformers (opening wide July 2). It is confirmed that there is a trailer, but it is definately not for his new Star Trek movie. In actuality it is for the mysterious JJ Abrams horror/monster movie project called ‘Cloverfield’ (possibly just a codename) which we reported on in February. People at Paramount still will not talk on the record but sources tell TrekMovie.com that the buzz about the film is all part of a kind of viral marketing push. Cloverfieldmovie.com was redirecting to Paramount, but now it is not anymore (the domain was purchased earlier this year shortly before word of the project was first leaked). [UPDATE: Abrams will produce the film along with Bryan Burk. Drew Goddard (Buffy, Angel, Alias, Lost) is writing and Matt Reeves (Felicity) is directing).] Here is a description of the trailer[UPDATE plus a link to a leaked version]:
On shaky video cam footage, we see a group of young New Yorkers throwing a party for a friend who is moving. No music, no voice-over intoning “In a world…” Just what looks like raw footage. Then there’s booming and shaking. An earthquake? What’s up? The party goers head to the roof, where they can see things flying through the sky (meteors? explosion debris?) More running and confusion.Somebody says something like “Look at the size of that thing!” but we don’t see it on the videocam footage, which still looks raw and real even though it involves shit shooting out of the sky. Near the very end of the trailer, we see a massive chunk of debris hit the ground: the head of the Statue of Liberty. Then: “From J. J. Abrams. Coming January 18 2008.” No title.
Obviously it was the ‘From J.J. Abrams 2008′ stuff that got people thinking about Star Trek, because it is the only 2008 project that he is officially involved in. Last July Abrams did sign a five year multi-picture deal and this is clearly one of the projects. At the time it was said he would not only do big projects like Trek, but also some smaller low budget films. It is likely Cloverfield falls into this category. It is quite unusual for a studio to put out a trailer for a project they do not even admit exists, and some are questioning whether this is going to work. Time Out Chicago asks the question "How is buzz supposed to build for Cloverfield (and bad title,by the way) if only supergeniuses like Scott [researcher] and supergeeks like the staff of Ain’t It Cool News can find the film?" They have a good point, however it may be that this film is a small film that is really only aimed at the ’supergeeks’ and between now and next January it is sure to get some more traditional forms of promotion. It is kind of a shame that after signing his new deal with Paramount (in which Star Trek was to be the first project) that the first teaser and film to be released will not be Star Trek.

I saw the teaser, and it is attached to “Transformers”. The first thing I thought was, what is this movie that it would be attached to the biggest movie of the summer. Because it started kinda dull. Its just a bunch of people at a going away party it looks like one guy is making a video for the guy who is movig to hong kong or something. He talks to some people they say their goodbyes into the camrea. THEN everthing shakes and some kind of giant roar unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Car alarms are going off thought the city, some at the party suggest going to the roof to gat a better view. They show the city then something in the middle (maybe a building or just in the street) blows up, and I mean flames higher then all the buildings in New York. I heard other peole say there were meteors but I think it was just flaming debris. I can’t remember how but now the camrea is street level, and don’t forget this is all still in home video format. and there was another giant roar and everything shakes, bulilding are in flames (flying debris) and people are runnig for dear lives. I swore I herad one person say “Giant Lion” but could be wrong he could just be referring to the sound of the roar, because we never see what it actually is. But whatever it is, it must be huge. Because the next shot we see is the head of the staute of liberty fly into the street. Then BLACK no title, no nothing just a date January ‘08.
Oh Please, Lord, do not allow it to be another Godzilla.
And may the nacelles spin correctly.
Honestly, though, it sounds like a cool flick. Long as deres lots o’ ’splosions and stuff.

The monster is known as The Parasite. That’s all I know.
The guy the video is for is supposedly going to Japan…not that I think it’s Godzilla, because I doubt there’s ANY public demand for such a flick, but that could be significant some way or another.
And I doubt it’s LOST…that just sounds too good to be true.

I saw the trailer last night and I swear right before the stature of liberty’s head flew off someone was running down the street and yelled its a lion or something to do with a lion. Was I just hearing things or what? I been checking everywhere and no one has said this.

Some kind person has uploaded the teaser onto the ever reliable youtube.com The video is called “J.J. Abrams Cloverfield”. It states that J.J. Abrams is only a Producer and that Mark Reeves is the Director.

Yea, first thing I thought when I saw it was Godzilla, but i also agree, the last few have been failures, and that is coming from a Godzilla fan. It will be interesting to see what else comes out about this over the next few months.
Also the idea of a “Giant Lion Movie” doesn’t sound that appealing, I usually like movies where I know some of the background of what is going on, but I suppose that is just ignorance.
I read that the original script for the 1998 Godzilla was originall going to:
1) have a Godzilla that actually looked like a cross between Godzilla and the Jurassic Park T-Rex
2) Stan Winston studios doing the monster effects
3) Pit Godzilla up against a PARASITIC ALIEN monster called GRIFFIN, who arrives on Earth via METEOR. Early sketches show Griffin looking like a winged lion.
When I first saw the trailer, I thought American Godzilla: good version, but if Sony-Tristar really does have another G film underway, then this probably isn’t it. Oh, well…
Voltron?
I have to say, I will be mildy disappointed if this turns out to be another Gozilla remake… that was actually my first thought as to what it might be. You have to admit though… the idea of making a movie shot ENTIRELY through a handheld video camera - quite intriguing. But if this IS Godzilla, then hopefully it’s done the right way.
Still, a very cool trailer, and a genius marketing device.

The only thing that really jumped into my head was Voltron. I thought I heard him say something about a giant lion, and what better time to show a trailer than in a like movie such as Transformers? I dunno

And it just makes sense that if it were Godzilla with the whole “done from the home video perspective thing” might be novel then that would fit the profile of a viral video campaign tied to a large film.

I don’t know what it could be…all I know is that it really scared me when I saw those random flashes of people running frantically out of the building. Not that that’s new.. it’s just that seeing it from a handheld camera added a bit of horror for those people whereas people were dying left and right in Transformers and I didn’t really care. Regardless, I’m pumped and I hope Abrams doesn’t disappoint.
I could of sworn they said lion but i guess we’ll wait to a better video or an official something. I have mixed feelings about a Godzilla move, either way i’ll go see it, im just hoping they dont screw what ever this movie is up.

I just read on IGN.com that the new “fake” name for this abrams thing is called “Slusho” which is a reference to the Slurpee type drink on Alias.
BUT, I did a google search of Slusho, and I got a couple of postings in a site about something called Project Serpo, which is supposed to be a real life accounting of….

Now look at the right of the page you will see another star. place your curser over that. You will see hyroglyphics with the letter A at the start and the letter z at the end. Now click on the ball on the bottom you will see 7 keys that pop up. VOLTRON is spelled when you compare the symbols to the letters

The decoder decodes CTHULHU, not VOLTRON and the movie is going to be an adaption of HP LOVECRAFTS “THE CALL OF THE CTHULHU”, that’s all im willing to devulge………1.18.08. is when you will have to wait to find out!

It’s definitely “It’s alive” not “It’s a lion.” Look at this trailer… look at the vibe they are going for. Take a good look at the tension and atmosphere they are setting up… now imagine that it’s revealed to be about New York being attacked by a giant (and presumably fire-breathing) Lion. Do they remotely seem to jibe? C’mon…
