Rumor: Garner as Spock’s Love Interest?

Well the latest rumor comes from Star Magazine, so bear that in mind as you read it. And here it is:

SPOCK LOVES JEN GARNER!
Star has learned exclusively that in the new Star Trek film, which is a prequel to the original hit series, the outwardly emotionless vulcan Mr. Spock has a love interest! Not only would Jen, 34, "be just the right person for Star Trek because she’s a chameleon," an insider says, but the film’s director, J.J. Abrams, cast her on Alias and has a history of giving jobs to people he worked with before! Beam her up!

TrekMovie.com has not been able to get confirmation or denial on this one. However we have long noted that there is likely to be a romantic element of the film if you just look back at how Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman have strong female characters and romance in most of their work. In M:I:3 they even got Tom Cruise’s Ethen Hunt married. The surprise here is that it is Spock and not Kirk getting the lady. Garner does seem to have a gap in her schedule between the movie she is currently filming and another slated for 2009 release so that part is at least plausible, and we know JJ has her number.

UPDATE: Here is a scan…

Regardless of the truth, this (and other recent rumors) shows how the new team behindTrek XI and the return to classic characters has moved the buzz machine Hollywood up a level from recent Trek films.

UPDATE: Latest on Trek XI Pre-Production & Casting

  1. Would she be the lovely Leila Kalomi?

  2. Well, if a Vulcan’s going to fall for someone, Jennifer Garner could fit the bill.

  3. Boy, who can blame Spock for wanting to “butter her muffin”! What a waste that a gorgeous and talented woman like Garner is wasting her time with a no-talent flake like Ben Affleck!

  4. Oh… Matt Damon as Kirk, Jen Garner as Spock’s love interest…

PLEASE don’t let this mean that Ben Affleck is going to be Spock. I cannot fathom this insanity! What’s next? Is Robin Williams going to play Admiral Nogura? How do you like ‘dem apples?!

  7. #5 - an action movie directed towards the mainstream masses… at least that’s what Beavis & Butthead said recently ;)

So of course there needs to be sex in it too! Isn’t it curious how EVERYONE has tried to “fix” Trek by including more action and sexing it up, desparately hoping to attract “the mainstream”? Everyone since 1997, including the infamous KillerBees (R.I.P.) So it’s clearly a fresh and new recipe! :p

If she’s a love interest for Spock, Leila Kalomi would be a logical conclusion, captain.
But, I would hypothesize she would look good in pointed ears, too.

  9. Well, here’s the thing…it IS gonna be different, there is no denying it. Does that mean I can’t swallow it, as a fan who grew up watching those Trek reruns in the early 70’s???? Hmmm…so, far I PLAN to give it the benefit of the doubt and buy into it hook, line, and sinker. I feel this HAS to happen if Trek is going to survive. If it dies because of this, then let it die! Frankly, if it tanks, we STILL have all the Trek’s created up to this point. It’ll just be the prospect of anything new will be dead. THIS MOVIE will define where I go with any future Trek’s attempted. If this bombs, I’m done. I’ll be a crusty old geezer sitting in a wheelchair someday with a dvd remote and my original Treks.

I like the idea of Garner being in it if she plays Leila Kalomi. A nice nod to Trek history and a great way to see what makes Spock tick!!!! Maybe we’ll find out that Spock “inspired” Kirk to become a womanizer. LOL

  12. Is JJ’s mom going to play Spock’s mother? Wow this guy loves to hand out free money to his friends….worse than Kevin Smith for casting friends.

  16. Pllpppthh. I just don’t believe there are going to be this many big name stars in a Star Trek film. I mean, how many were in Mission Impossible III? Just Cruise, Rhames, and Kerri Russell from Felicity. Yet somehow Brody, Affleck, Damon, Garner AND Senise are all lined up for this one? Why, soon we’ll hear rumors that Peter O’ Toole is lined up to play Old Jonathan Archer, while Will Smith will play Uhura’s older brother. And Naomi Watts will play Nurse Chapel. And on and on…

  18. You know, of all the actors mentioned to play SPOCK, I hate to admit it, but the one who looks the most like him is Ben Affleck. He is a good actor and was great in Hollywoodland. Plus, him and Damon are close friends, so the Kirk / Spock chemistry would work well on screen.

    You also forgot Laurence Fishburne.

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Blalock
Naomi Watts as anything in a mini and go go boots

  21. Affleck as Spock:

Alright, I know I may receive a deluge of shoes, oranges, apples and assorted other things people throw, but… would Ben Affleck as Spock really be that bad?

Whoa, whoa, allow me to state my case first - hold the deluge, please! Put that down, man. Just wait.

Okay, has anyone seen Hollywoodland? If you have, try to tell me Ben didn’t own his role as George Reeves. He was brilliant! And believe me I normally hate his movies, really hate them. His annoying, cocky, hammy performances, and his wisecrack-laden dialogue get under my skin, causing me to abstain from most his films - if not all of them. However, in Hollywoodland, Ben blew me away at how un-Affleck-like he was. As I said, he owned the role. He carried recorded voice clips of George Reeves with him and listened between every take! Judiciously studying the voice, the mannerisms. Not one hint of hamminess at all. He nailed each aspect of Mr. Reeves, in my opinion!

Now if he were to be as methodical in a study of Leonard Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock - meet with him, watch every episode of TOS, the movies - I think, really think, he can pull it off. Or maybe not. Though what I stated above is your proof that he has the ability.

Ben Affleck as Spock - it can happen!

(Hopefully none of you are wearing cleats or spurred cowboy boots!)

  22. Re: 19. Oops again! But _that’s it_ in terms of the celebrities MI:III had! And most of them are lower tier than the names being thrown around for Trek XI.

    Posted by Sleeper Agent X | March 16, 2007, 12:59 pm
  23. I agree, that *ahem* — news item — looks about as reliable as “Bat Boy found Living in White House Basement.”

But that said, Jen would be awesome in anything she does, including Trek. And I’m pretty sure that a post-Gigli Affleck is smart enough to avoid appearing opposite his main squeeze.

I’d might buy him as Gary Mitchell though…

    Posted by Lao3D | March 16, 2007, 1:02 pm
  24. 7.

I think the original already came out “sexed up” so to speak. I mean really no Star Trek captain ever got to use their…umm, captain’s log as much as Kirk did. So, I just don’t see the logic in your remark.

    Posted by MiamiTrek | March 16, 2007, 1:05 pm
  25. 21 - I find it disconcerting that in the majority of old tv shows blown up into movies, at least one actor feels compelled to ‘ape’ the original characterization. Gary Oldman is a good actor… uh, used to be a good actor. He Jonathan Harris impression wore thin… uh, almost as thin as the entire rest of Lost in Space. The Beverly Hillbillies and Brady Bunch movies were comedies (or so I’m told) and lent themselves to parody.
PLEASE don’t make, release or acknowledge any movie in which actors are playing William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy playing Kirk and Spock. They are originals and need to be left with their accomplishments. Let’s see a NEW interpretation of the characters themselves.

    ps- oop. meant balock

  26. Even though its all rumor at this point, I’m definitely not excited over all of these casting rumors. I’m just not a fan of these actors that are being considered/rumored, with the exception being Gary Sinise as Bones.

    Posted by Penhall | March 16, 2007, 1:09 pm
  27. Sorry 21, but here comes a shoe. I can and will try to tell you he did NOT own his role as Reeves. Was it an adequate performance? Sure. Did he have the presence, voice, dignity of Reeves? Hell no. I don’t care how many tapes he listened to. And I’ve liked Affleck in many things. But clearly you did not grow up watching “Adventures of Superman” wearing a towel around your neck and eating sugary snack treats.

And as Spock? Um, no. Not even close.

    Posted by Kirky | March 16, 2007, 1:19 pm
  30. #24 “captain’s log”, I love it! That gives me an idea! You know, Kirk wasn’t the only womanizer back during the production of TOS, the Shat himself was no slouch in that department either back then….hmmm, maybe when we heard the voice-over, “Captain’s log, star date 1321.4″ it was the Shat’s “secret code”, bragging to the fan’s out there as to how many bimbo’s he had dated and bagged so far that year! Yeah, you betcha! Long live the Shat!

Posted by Michael Appleton | March 16, 2007, 1:22 pm
  31. #24 - The difference is, TOS had the depth and mature content to balance any frivolities. Today too many so-called producers believe it should be the prime centre of good fiction and (unfortunately) science fiction.

To cite some very wise words… “Good science fiction is about ideas” Not about tech gadgets and weird creatures. And not about spaceship battles and soap opera trivialities either.

Spock having a love interest is totally stupid. What’s next? A love triangle with another Vulcan? Some lame “fight to the death” over her, too?

  35. I HATE Ben Affleck and don’t want to see him as Spock, but if they insist on giving him the role then they should also DEMAND he lose at least 40 pounds of weight before filming the movie! A young Spock was lean and right now Affleck looks like a blowfish with a thyroid condition! My God, if Affleck gained six more pounds he’d deserve his own zip code!

  37. Garner would be good casting.

    Affleck wouldn’t be bad, either.

I swear, this place is beginning to be like the AICN talkbacks - people seem to climb on top of each other to be the first to post dismissive, insulting and mean remarks of the most personal kind about performers and artists they never have (or will) meet. Affleck’s abilities as an actor, after all, have no bearing whatever on his and Garner’s private relationship.

There’s somewhat less profanity here than at AICN, that’s about it.

  39. OF COURSE a performer’s personal life will impact their demand at the ticket office. They wish that wasn’t true, but wishing doesn’t make it so. Michael Jackson likes to play the wrong way with children, he can’t get a concert gig to save his life. Tom Cruise wants to behave like a crazy loon by jumping on Oprah’s couch, his career diminishes. Ben Affleck gives off a very bad vibe to most of us and has an arrogant sneer pasted on his face (in real life) to hide a lack of talent, we don’t want to go see his movies. See how it works?

  44. #12: If Abrams casts friends and associates, he certainly wouldn’t be the first producer/director to do so, even within ST. Look at Roddenberry himself - if it hadn’t been for him, Majel Barrett and Nichelle Nichols wouldn’t have gotten their roles (especially Barrett, whom NBC thought was a lousy actress), and it’s likely De Kelley wouldn’t have gotten his role had it not been for his prior collaboration with Roddenberry.

As for AFLAC - sorry, I meant Affleck - I agree with Anthony, I could see him as Mitchell if that character were in the script. I’m still struggling with Damon as Kirk, though; I just don’t see the charisma. Sinise would have been ok as McCoy years ago but I think his age is wrong for a prequel.

  46. This is rather bogus and not worth the electrons it’s printed on. At least the people in line at the grocery store reading the Star are hearing that there will be a new Trek.

“ya hear that, Bubba….. they’re gonna make a new Star Track movie…”

    “nah…. you’re sh*ttin’ me… Cap’n Kirk and that pointy ear guy…er… Doctor Spock?”

“yep… but I heard that the Cap’n Kirk guy done exploded from overeating… or maybe he was just too full of himself… wasn’t he on some nudie dancing game show?”

“Ya… Momma liked that one. The Spock Guy does nudie pictures too now. ”

And so it goes for the major demographic of Star readers.

    Anthony…thanks for the site.

Hey, I’m just excited that they’re actually considering really talented actors for the main roles!

I don’t want to jinx it, but it actually appears that Abrams et al are giving Trek the quality and serious consideration that it, without a doubt, merits.

  52. John Pemble…i agree on both counts….although lets not turn this into a political debate

but beyond if it is true or not, as I pointed out at the end, the interesting thing is that the Star is writing about Trek at all. Bear in mind we are still many many months before Paramount have even started picking up their phones to start selling this movie, yet the MSM are already buzzing about it.

the combo of a new team and IMHO the usage of the TOS characters is really working for them. Can anyone imagine MTV or Star covering another film from the old guard 20 months before release?

  53. I *love* the idea of Jennifer Garner being cast as Spock’s love interest.

  54. This is very concerning……. May I just remind everyone that Kalomi loved Spock, and declared her feelings toward him, but Spock would not allow himself to express any emotion in return. This is a fact. Kalomi herself expressed this in “This side of paradise” If the writers of the new movie show Spock expressing feelings for her, then they are WRONG. They are changing Star Trek history, canon and changing the wonderful character of Mr Spock. This would be unforgiveable. Let me say, that I agree that the character of Leila Kalomi should be in the story early on, but they MUST remain true to the facts as I have stated above.

  59. With all these big name stars in the mix, no wonder the budger will bust $100 million!

I would play Spock’s love interest for $10 and a free bagel. Heck, I’d do it just for the bagel. :)

I actually have nothing against Affleck, but can he play Spock is the question. Nimoy proved it is not an easy role to pull off. More than any other character on TOS, Spock is the most layered, interesting character in terms of internal demons and personal struggles. He is the epitome of still waters running deep.

Posted by Adam Cohen | March 16, 2007, 7:17 pm
  60. This is very concerning….. Although I am pleased that the character of Leila Kalomi could be in the story as it was established Leila met Spock on Earth in his early days in Starfleet and was infatuated with him. In fact she loved Spock. However, she stated herself in “This Side of Paradise” that Spock could not and did not return her affections during that time. In fact, Leila Kalomi declared her feelings toward him, but Spock would not allow himself to express any emotion in return. This is established fact. It is star trek history and established canon. Any attempt to change this and have Spock carry on with a love affair with Leila Kalomi would be WRONG. It would incorrectly represent the true character of Spock. I hope they don’t do this just to gain money. It would horribly distort star trek history and of course the wonderful character of Mr. Spock.

While I don’t agree with everything I hear on NPR (Or the BBC for that matter) at least most of their reporting most of the time is credible and thoughtful, as opposed to the “infotainment” of most network “news” broadcasts, which seem to be following the lead of the tabloids..down to the lowest common denominator. 66. The secret to Mister Spock is quite simple actually, as far as portraying him-

In every Trek incarnation we have seen, in every portrayal of a Vulcan besides Nimoy and to a lesser extent Sarek, the actors and actresses portrayed Vulcans as emotionless. Lacking emotion is an indication of a sociopath.
Nimoy understood that there is a fundamental difference between lack of emotions, and repressed emotions.

What makes Spock such an interesting fictional character is witnessing his internal stuggle with these conflicting impulses and genetic , social ,and cultural pre-dispositions he has been exposed to all of his life.
Remember Star Trek- The Motion Picture?

Spock almost obtained Kolinahr, and consequently, when we first see him on Vulcan and aboard the Enterprise, he isn’t very interesting.
He was robot-like and entirely too detached. What was interesting was observing his personal journey and discovering that he was close to becoming like Vejur, cold and barren. So when he finally cries it’s a validation that he finally accepts himself and his place in the universe, and becomes more like the Spock we remember.

Any actor portraying Spock HAS to understand this dynamic. If you play Spock as emotionless, it’s doomed to fail and come off as insipid.

‘This is established fact. Spock.’

Bollocks! This isn’t fact: it’s a line in a forty-year-old episode of a ***fictional*** TV series. The new movie is a new interpretation of Star Trek that respects the original, but is being made for the present day. Even DC Fontana was willing to portray a Spock capable of love in her novel ‘Vulcan’s Glory!’

Spock’s simmering feelings: rage, love, hate, resentment, betrayal and his hilarious sense of humour are part of what made him great. ***If*** he has a great romance in the film then good for him, especially if the object of his affections are Mrs Affleck!

This is a new telling of the Star Trek myth. Think of it as a parallel universe if it helps. But rants about ‘fact’ and f*cking ‘canon’ do no one any favours.

Give it up and accept that the new team are rebuilding Trek from the ground up, ***informed but not handcuffed by*** the old series. Nothing they do will be ‘WRONG,’ merely internally consistent with their view of Star Trek.

This isn’t going to be the Star Trek you grew up with, although it will hopefully capture the spirit of the series we loved. Either embrace that or give up and move on!

  68. Do you think Paramount is contemplating, or has surmised, that if they put a steamy sex scene between Spock and a love interest in the new film that the box office gross will go up commensurately? Picture it: a hot, steamy, torrid sex scene with Spock and Garner that makes Basic Instinct look like a Disney film! Yahooooo! Somebody check Roddenberry’s coffin and see if he’s started spinning yet!

  70. I rather like the idea of Affleck as Mitchell — although it’d be a little freaky (and maybe too “what a small world” distracting) opposite Damon as Kirk _and_ Garner as Leila Kalomi (but it’d be an oh-so-inspired touch to include that character).

It’ll be interesting to see how attentive — and allegiant — Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci are to continuity, but I’m encouraged by the fact that they’re apparently fairly hardcore Trek geeks.

Of course, if this is a true prequel spotlighting Kirk’s first mission as captain of the Enterprise (which I hope/presume), we’ll likely be deprived of McCoy, getting a Kirk/Spock/Mitchell triumvirate instead of Kirk/Spock/McCoy — which, frankly, I think would be cool, refreshing and interesting.

Still kinda hoping for a Tom Hanks cameo as Pike, though. ;-)

Imagine Garner plays a Vulcan who rips her pointed ears off and stabs her lovers to death mid-coitus!!! ;)

I’d rather imagine Garner on her back with both legs up over Spock’s shoulders as he……oops, was that my outer voice? My bad!

  75. Here would be an even bigger twist in canon -instead of ponn farr occurring every 7 years, it LASTS 7 years. That’s the gag: Jen knocking on a different crewperson’s door every other night, asking, “Is it OK if I bunk with you tonight? I got out of the shower, and Spock was standing there again with that arched eyebrow, hefting his lirpa with both hands. One of these days, he’s gonna kill me with that thing. God, I can’t wait until he gets his period. ” Hee-hee-hee-HAW-HAW! >:-D

  76. Kirk (to alien ambassador): ‘Ambassador, I’d like you to meet my first officer - and the finest ’swordsman’ in the quadrant - Commander Spock.’

    Alien Ambassador: ‘Greetings, Comman-’

Spock: ‘I do not shake with my………hand, sir.’

Kirk: ‘Would the ambassador’s daughter care to join us?’

    Alien Ambassador: ‘I think NOT.’

  77. Yeah, what can I say….every seven years, during ponn farr, if Spock swung around suddenly, he could kill somebody with that THING!!

  78. #4 Robin Williams as Adm. Nogura. He could play the crazy. That would be a great scene. The admiral could talk to himself as we watch Shatner contort his face in response! ROTFL!

  79. #71 the board is hot today! ROTFL! Woooooo!

Affleck as Mitchell does work, I hate to admit. I’m on the fence about Affleck, but he and Damon were GREAT in DOGMA. If they could bring that magic to a Kirk/Mitchell friendship playing pranks on innocent Starfleet Academy undergrads would be too much! Make It So!

  83. The interesting thing about this story is the fact they are saying she is to play Spock’s love interest. I f the story was she was playing Kirk’s love interest then I’d proberly say it was just typicial hype. But the Spock part of the story adds a grain of trueth. Mind you only a grain.

  84. All this on-going rumor stuff is being very disconcerting to me. As I have often said in previous postings, TOS was never about star power, and this movie SHOULD NOT be about star power, so-called star power will not dictate the success of this movie!!!! As a fan of TOS for some 40 years, I will NOT see this movie, if Damon, Garner and Husband, etc, etc are in it. That should not be the drawing card. The drawing card should be (what hopefully will be) great story telling. I would rather see a group of lesser-known yet talented actor assume the roles. Yes I do think that Gary Sinise would be a FANTATSIC McCoy!!!! However if this movie is to be a true prequel, McCoy should not even be featured in it. Having said that, I can live with the fact if there is just one “huge star” featured in the movie — perhaps Juliette Binoche as Amanda.

  85. This movie will be heavy in cast and light on story. they will rely on starpower to bring patrons in and ignore the story.

  88. #85 — I hope you’re mistaken, if not then that could spell the end of the movie franchise and that will be a sad thing, especially with all of the anticipation and excitement that is going on.

#86-I hope you’re right!!!! Having said that I still cannot envision Damon and Brody and Kirk and Spock.

  89. I agree with #54, 60, and 67 in this respect: It would be wrong to show Spock “outwardly” showing his attraction to Leila Kaloni back on Earth (since we know her love went unrequited).

However, this could be the perfect vehicle to illustrate the struggle Spock has with his emotions. Maybe he never returned Leila’s advances, but how do we know how he felt inside. Possibly we (the audience) will be privy to how it affected Spock privately. Maybe he had to go home every night and put himself into a deep meditative state just to keep his true feelings for Leila repressed.

Someone else mentioned on another forum that possibly Spock left his teaching post at the Academy at took his post aboard Pike’s Enterprise just to “run away from” Leila and the feelings he had for her.

  90. #89 “Maybe he had to go home every night and put himself into a deep meditative state just to keep his true feelings for Leila repressed”.
Or, being a young Spock, he went home every night and beat his privates like they owed him money! He would mutter, “ponn farr this, baby!” as he worked his magic. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

  91. On the ealier comment that Trek doesn’t need star power, I have to disagree. Paramount is proberly going to put quite a bit of cash into this film, and for it just to break even, not to mention make a profit, it is going to need to pull in lots of non fans. To do that you need BIG name actors, not a bunch of never heard ofs. And just because you have big name actors doesn’t mean the story will suck.
The problem is people are comparing XI with other TV remake movies and I think the major differance is most if not all of them were made with the view it was an easy way to make money. Get brands that people know, throw in a few current flavour of the month actors and the masses will beat a path to your door. The people making these films weren’t fans of the shows they just wanted to make a quick buck.
The differance here is JJ is a Trek fan, he’s making a TOS based film because it is his favorite Trek series. Hech if he just wanted to make another ho hum Trek film it would have been a Next Gen film. Hard to do worse than the last couple.
All I’ve read I can hardly wait to see his vision on screen. As for his using actors he’s worked with in the past, I say that is totally logical atleast he knows what sort of performance he can get out of them.

  92. I really happen to think that the very idea of kirk and spock could kill the franchise. Going back before kirk didnt work for a telivision series, and it wotn work for a movie. Also your breaking up the continuity of the movies. Also with getting actors like “ben aflack” and “matt dillion” and all of these big time stars would just make it seem that the franchise is so weak that we have to use these big stars to even get people ino the theaters. Also its been said that the movie is supposed to have alot more action then any other star trek movie. Its a fantasy and sci fi movie, not some stupid action film with no real plot. Star Trek was about the exploration of mankind, not about wars between worlds and gun fights. I just really think that the people who are commanding star trek right now are in their latch ditch effort and are trying to change it into its something that its not to attract the guy who watches movies because theirs big explosions and naked woman. Its very sad…

  94. If Spock had a love interest, it would actually be more like the original series - that’s my take on it. IMHO Kirk was good at getting chicks into bed, but Spock was the one who left the trail of broken hearts.

    Posted by fascinoma | March 24, 2007, 9:56 am
  95. Oh - IMHO - the reason Spock didn’t really go for Leila Kalomi (except under the influence) and didn’t at all go for Nurse Chapel is because we’ve always seen him with strong women, as opposed to passive, adoring blondes.

    Posted by fascinoma | March 24, 2007, 9:58 am
  96. I’m glad I don’t know much about the original series (although I am a 90’s and 00’s fan as i’m only 20)but I know something about Garner and Abrams et al.

Firstly- anything J.J. has written so far has been spectacular and well plotted. Alias was always brilliant but especially when he was running things from the set- he ALWAYS choses a great team to have behind him and anything he does attracts high quality actors.

I don’t actually understand why people don’t think that this movie would attract the stars. If you were an actor, wouldn’t you want to star in a movie that the creator of Alias and Lost was producing for a franchise that has been going for 41 years and attracts audiences worldwide???

Jenniffer Garner is perfection personified and although they have joked about her being Kirk, being the token babe etc, i wouldn’t be surprised if she was a pivotal character if she was cast in the film.
