What types of rare audio and video from Trek history…any idea?

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what’s the connection between the “Treksperts” listed here and the ones that frequently show up on this site? Anthony, Jeff Bond, Daren Dochterman, Robert Meyer Burnett, Mark Altman, Geek Magazine — you guys all hang out together or have some shared history we should know about? Is there an L.A. Trek geek hangout or something? It just seems like there’s some kind of familiarity that goes beyond professional acquaintances.

Crap on Friday? That’s awful, I have to work that day otherwise I’d head down to SF for it.

For all I know, that’s true! Seriously, since none of these people mentioned are currently affiliated with Paramount or Trek, what makes them “Treksperts”? How do these people all know each other where they show up here and on panels together. I’m just curious how this fraternity works.

#7 - Well, I’ve always been curious myself, Anthony–just how do you have these connections to what’s going on in Paramount and CBS-D? Do you work in the industry? Have friends in the industry? Take pictures of people who work in the industry in incriminating positions, then blackmail them with the photos for news scoops? Just curious.

Oh no, can it be? All this time we don’t even think to ask who Anthony might be? When we peel back the mask of anonymity the internet provides, who does it end up being in reality? No, oh no,…not…the Shat!! By God, never mind the ego on the man, I simply admire his time management skills! Have you ever seen a 75 year old with this much energy?

Shouldn’t the panel more properly be titled:

“The Rise, Fall, Rise, Fall and Rise of Star Trek”?

(TOS to cancellation to TMP/TWOK/TNG/etc. to Nemesis/Enterprise to Abrams Trek?)

(as someone pointed out on trekbbs).

It is curious to read contributors to this site mention “so and so is a friend of mine” or see reviews written by editors at Geek Monthy and then see that Anthony will be hanging out at the Geek Monthly booth at this con. It just makes me wonder who knows who, what’s the behind-the-scenes history and how they got anointed as the spokesmen for discussing the “future of Trek” when they’re not affiliated with Paramount or the franchise.

I still would be interested to know–in general terms, mind you–what Anthony’s background and connection to Trek is and how he’s positioned himself to get these interesting scoops.

I guess the question then is, how does editing an online magazine make someone a “Trekspert”? I mean, doesn’t that really just mean he’s a fan with a megaphone? How does making a small indie film 10 years ago like Free Enterprise (really a fan film before there were fan films) make their opinions any more knowledgeable or important than any others? Is this site a spinoff of Geek Monthly?

I guess the reason I’m asking is because it’s one thing to have a website that posts news and rumors, and another thing when the personalities behind the scenes start marketing themselves as “experts” and establishing themselves as molders of fan opinion on the future of the franchise. It says right on this site there is no affiliation with Paramount or official Star Trek, yet the “friends” involved are clearly trying to establish themselves as leaders of an online community that will detirmine the direction and acceptance of creative decisions. I’m not sure I like the idea of outsiders (with a few inside connections in their rolodex) assuming influence over a franchise they don’t own. If Anthony and the Geek Monthly guys were on a panel discussing the “future of TrekMovie.com, Geek Monthly or the online fan community” then I wouldn’t see a problem. There they really ARE experts.

I don’t go to these things, but I would assume it just means they are a group of people with some things to offer that may be interesting to some other people without any other ulterior motives.

#22 exactly. All this is a one of many little discussion panels being held at a 3-day event that is a second string comic convention (WonderCon is like ComiCon’s little brother). It was sponsored by Geek Monthly, so they brought in people they know.

Wow you assume that anyone outside of Paramount and the focus groups that they will eventually show Trek XI could have some kind of secret influence on Trek. You make a panel of a few dudes who like Trek and have some minor ties to the industry out to have way too much influence.

And FYI: Geek Monthly was started after TrekMovie.com was and are to totally separate projects. One is a commercial venture with a publisher, Geek Monthly is a print magazine you know, and one is simply Tony’s own fan site. The plus to Tony working on both is that because of living in the LA region and the networking he’s done he has been able to get contributors and information that applies to TrekMovie.com as well.

I’m not saying there’s a call to arms or hostile takeover effort. But we’ve seen here plenty of times that fans often try to influence or send messages to the powers that be to “change this and that” or influence the creative process. As the guy deciding who is going to review episodes of ST-R or who is going to comment on Paramount’s creative decisions, Anthony is in a position of some power over fan opinion and online buzz (even if its relatively minor). He’s certainly free to do that and more power to him. Since we know the people at CBS-D DO read this site and consider the feedback, it’s fair to know more about the people running it because in ways small (and potentially large) they ARE influencing the future of the franchise.

You’re probably right. I’m not suggesting anything sinister here. What I’m wondering is just who is putting themselves out there as “Treksperts” and what qualifications they really have. Because their opinions ARE being read by a lot of fans and it does, to some degree, shape the direction of certain debates. Say, for example, Paramount had picked another director for Trek XI - one Anthony or Jeff really didn’t like for whatever reason. Their dissatisfaction could certainly influence the perception among fans about the film’s direction and the potential for success.

So, on the one hand these guys are promoting themselves to fans as “Treksperts” qualified to pontificate on the future of the franchise, but on the other they’re just “dudes” with “minor industry ties” and no influence. How many people would come to a panel advertised as “some dudes who like Trek with minor industry ties and no influence”? No one. It doesn’t have to involve a nefarious scheme to say that these “Treksperts” want to be seen among fans as more than just “some dudes”. And when you get enough people thinking you’re more than “some dude” and who will listen to your opinions, that puts you in the position to influence things. Look at AICN. The industry knows that Harry has enough sway over enough idiots to influence buzz if nothing else. And buzz equals bucks. That’s why some studios make an effort to invite him to premieres, send him gifts and ask him to visit their sets. They’re not idiots. They’re buying him off. And who the hell is he really? Just a guy with a keyboard surrounded by film posters in Austin. And to be clear, I’m not equating Anthony with Harry. I was just wondering who these “dudes” advertising themselves as experts are.

And I think that’s great. Really. I’ve got NOTHING against Anthony. Don’t mistake me. But I think as fans we need to be careful about who is stepping up and calling themselves a “Trekspert” and what they’re pontificating about. Because it’s one thing to REPORT news, rumors and facts (which this site does really well) and another to start advocating certain creative directions. It’s a fine line that can be tempting to cross.

To be clear, Tony didn’t put that label on himself, he was invited rather last minute to join the panel. He and I talked briefly on the phone before he left for WonderCon and he had remarked how he doesn’t really qualify as a “Trekspert”, he’s just a guy who likes Trek and runs a site.

Came back from WonderCon. Thousands of people were there, hundreds of vendors and comic artists. If you go to the ComiCon/WonderCon website, WonderCon is put on by the same people who do ComiCon. ComiCon is for Southern California, and WonderCon is for Northern California. Of course, there are those who fortunate to go to both.

So can Anthony or one of the other participants of the show give us an overview of what happened at the show? I live near-ish to SF, but I couldn’t make it.

How did the panel do, what was discussed, anything come out of it?

I heard that when Anthony et al couldn’t make the blue flame appear at the top of the obelisk, the crowds stoned them for not being true Treksperts…
