umm ok I don’t like comment based soley on the crappy little previews, but the planet killer’s core doesn’t look as cool as they described it in the recent interview.

That was…….really, really nice.

These still images and the preview video do look pretty awesome. I like that one still shot looking down on the Enterprise and the Constellation below it.

Daren Doc’s preview looked quite awesome, but the CBS guys look like they’ve out done themselves and maybe exceed Daren Docs! The only thing that looks a little off was the side view of TDM and it looked a tad fat. I do like the surface texture detailing for TDM and the 2 starships. This will be an exciting week! Two interpretations of TDM and they both look like pretty valid points of view.

What do you TOS fans think of the idea of an EXPANDED VISION ORIGINAL EPISODE WITH MORE CGI AND NEWLY SHOT FOOTAGE.If you like trek remastered maybe we can get them to do it.Incorperate all these things into a TOS Trek episode to make a 1-1/2 hour Trek TV movie.Any feedback to this idea?It’d be great to prime audience interest for the upcoming feature film.

Personally I like some of the subtle touches I’ve seen so far, the rock breaking on the surface of the Constellation, the new angles we get to see of the E, I think this weekend will be quite exciting.

But I think we need to stop seeing it as show down, but seeing it as an incredibly rare opportunity to see two distinct visions of something we all love, shown side by side. You’ve got CBS-D’s vision of how it should be, and Daren’s love of Trek that made him create a personal masterpiece. The fact that what we’ve seen of both look so amazing is a complement to each.

Of course it’s really tempting to call this Trek Bowl ‘07, the showdown of the titans of Trek. But I’m going to avoid doing that.

Oh and the I think CBS-D missed something because the Constellation’s nacelles look wrong. Like they are all burnt out or something. Hell, one looks like it’s gone completely.

I like the surface of the Planet Killer, it is reminiscent of the Cetacean probe from Trek IV, implying great age and a vast journey across time and space.

That said, I have been waiting for this one for years!!! “The Doomsday Machine” was fantastic, and now I can see it anew.

Daren — you are like Dekker in the shuttlecraft, but the results are far better. You have done so much with so little. I am grateful there are two out there. It’s just plain fun to compare. So, forgive the gushing right now about CBS-D. Or don’t. In any case, I’m SO glad both are around.

I’m just glad CBS were able to get it finished… And no, I have no problems with people liking what they like… that’s what makes it fun… Infinite Diversity and all that… Fun to see very different takes on the same thing.

Cool, but wasn’t the planet killer headed for the Rigel system (not Earth)?

Read #33 of the Grunberg article postings (a few back) to read some very funny fat jokes regarding Scotty (if I do say so myself).

The universe of Star Trek was ripe for creating giants and legends, Homeresque heroes and daring figures.

It isn’t a slam on Next Gen to say the universe and space travel became a very safe, ordinary, almost common affair.

Here we have a prime example - one of humankinds most sophisticated , marvelous technological wonders, a vessel truly worthy of admiration, wrecked and charred to a dead hulk.

How many of the original 13 Constitution class Starships were lost or damaged beyond repair during the Enterprise 5 year mission? ALL of them except Enterprise?

On Next Gen, and especially DS9, it was nothing to lose a starship, infact whole FLEETS were utterly decimated in engagements.

In Kirk’s era, bringing a starship home to port was a DAMN big deal and is infact why the man was promoted to Rear Admiral before 40 years of age not to mention Chief of Starfleets entire operations.

I like the way Skippers in Kirks era were oft the subject and victim of self grandisement and disillusion, being out of contact with the Admirality for extended periods, as well as having almost total arbitration in decision making processes.
In Kirks era when two skippers met it was a big deal, they all knew each other by name and reputation, either personal admiration or sometimes grudges.
In Next Gen era it became routine and commonplace to lose a ship “Oh boy Cap’n there goes the Floccanauccanihilipilification Class Antares destroyed.”
But consider the event they made out of the discovery of the wrecked Constellation, giving a deliberate almost Pearl Harbor vibe.

It’s a true testament to Gene Roddenberry, Shatner, Windom, Spinrad, et’ al that the appearance of a fake model can ellicit so much moving emotion.

I have to say I love the way they light the saucer section of the E as its rising from the planet killer. Its so barren but dramatic with those big letters. Just beautiful!

The damage on the constellation is far more realistic than the original. Poor Constellation!

…and did anyone notice they put the little colored light thingies under the shuttlebay True, it’s the little things that make me happy.

But as for the big things- from the preview images I’m seeing they look great. I love the detail of the wrecked Constellation. I was worried that they’d be too faithful and try hard to make it look like a little AMT model burned w/ a cigarette lighter, but this looks like a mangled starship. It clearly shows that the bridge is damaged and the warp engines will never warp again.

Had a few more views of the preview. Yes, agree that the detail on the Consellation is impressive.

Having seen the internal shot of the Planet Killer, the burning whatever you call it does look a bit of a let down. As was done in Balance of Terror, using CGI to create flame like effects are hard to pull off. Here, it looks like almost hand painted animation.

Not to say that the work here is bad, the new external skin of the Planet Killer is excellent, can’t wait to see it in motion. Wonder if they have portions translucent and glossy as the original model was and as Daren Doc has done it.

The new external shots of the Enterprise and Constellation were equally excellent. Still a tad of video game look to the surfaces, but better then ever!

Good job on the ships, but honestly, the doomsday machine looked hideous. The phaser impact on the thing’s surface made me chuckle a little bit. I’m glad I didn’t grow up with TOS, otherwise I would be quite distraught.

I hope they keep the Planet Killer “Sonic Warble” sound effect!

Talk about your iconic sound effects, it’s right up there with the “Wilhem Scream.”

I’m reserving judgment on the new FX shots until I see it bigger, but at first glance I’ll say I’m liking the starships… but I can’t say I’m real excited about the new Planet Killer. Hmmm…

On a geekier, more obsessive-compulsive tangent…

The Constellation’s registry number (NCC-1017) has always really bugged me as seeming weirdly inconsistent for Constitution Class starships (shouldn’t every ship in that class be NCC-17somethingsomething?) — plus it just looks like a goofy transposition/cheat of the Enterprise’s 1701. So I’m really, really curious if Okuda & Co. were at all tempted to “conform” it to something more consistent (like the temptation to correct Kirk’s tombstone in WNMHGB).

I thought the hull of the Doomsday Machine looked pretty lame and I’m 51, a film buff, a Trekker and imaginative to know they could have done better!

Hey Buckaroo! Look back at the Star Trek XI article (a few back), post #90. “What is your answer?” and don’t say, “I trust my instincts!”.

#49 and 50, I’m glad I’m not the only one who is a bit underwhelmed by the planet killer. The Enterprise and Constellation look great though.

The new planet killer looks much harder-edged than the original. The translucent skin on the original almost looked dainty to me. The remastered version looks much meaner.

Some of the shots look a little cartoonish to me. I’ll chalk it up to another overly rushed schedule that CBS digital has to go with. I hope the DVDs are better….

Will have to see saturday. Will suck having the ep I know so well chopped up for syndication. If they cut the “vulcans never bluff” line and the pause before Decker replys I’m out and will just wait for the eventual dvd and HD release.

And, because the AMT model decal set for NCC 1701… Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t the early AMT kits come with the entire primary hull lettering of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the registry number come as one big honkin’ decal, and it wasn’t until later that the two were split into separate decals?

This is more like it! The Enterprise model is looking the best yet, they’ve certainly spent more time on texturing her with obvious improvements in speculararity (finally - some sheen on the surface!) and lighting. There’s a wow factor here at last. The best from CBS D yet…

So far I’m impressed. Keep your hard work up CBS:D

Well the preview is here at last!

And the verdict is… Well, I personally have two ways of looking at these new upgrades now…

#1 There are regulars here who are sometimes very disappointed with certain changes and creative decisions being made by CBS Digital…and I am certainly one of them…lol…sorry about that…and this episode is no different. Some of these disappointments have nothing to do with the unfortunate fact that time and budget are seemingly against them, rather, that some of the choices made solely by the effects team are quite a departure, and inconsistant in their look and their quality…for instance, some old chestnuts such as the of lack of the original shows colour, some obviously better camera angles, lighting issues, or lack of, stuff like phasers and backdrops not being ammended at all, etc. etc. While I appreciate that a small preview box is not representative of the finished product as seen on High Definition, I myself, unfortunately for me, am totally underwhelmed by this latest cgi interpretation of the Doomsday Machine in this instance. While not knowing what actual “neutronium” looks like, I DO know what the original shows surface looked like, and I miss it’s more colourful, organic look. Yes, it still looks a scary object, but then it always would, whatever the incarnation, due to it’s fantastic and original unknown organic design. I agree that it’s internal, infernal look has not been done justice going by these particular clips, and think that Daren’s recreation trumps this one by far. And yes, while we now have two new versions of the Doomsday Machine, again, unfortunately for my own asthetic preference, it is the CBS Digital one that now becomes the de facto rendition when I eventually watch or buy the Remastered series…which I will by the way. So although some of the “Ship” shots and angles are interesting to see, others portray an inherant unconvincing look as usual,so sometimes I am disappointed with it all, Ah well.

#2 There are also regulars here who seem to be willing to lap up every new shot and creative choice with eager praise, and no critique whatsoever, no doubt just grateful in the fact that this Remastering is being done at all, and loving seeing new shots, angles, colours and interpretations. Lucky them. And lucky me too I guess, and yes, some stuff has indeed been great to see… I try to keep this in mind now.

My own two cents friends.

I’m glad most of the comments here seem to be positive. I can’t for the life of me figure out what some of the critics are even talking about. I should be used to that by now, I guess.
It has been my experience that EVERY remastered episode has looked much better than any still shots or quicktime movies that we see as previews.
As someone who is perfectly happy with the original effects, I just think it is great fun to see these alternate versions…….which is exactly what they are since the originals are readily available.
For me, on a good Star Trek episode they could have a hastily-constructed model kit with huge matte lines for the effects and it would still be fine because of the characters and storytelling.
These new effects are just more icing on the cake.
Now I just wish I could find my old copy of Doomsday so I can watch it before this weekend. $%#!!

I am disappointed, however, that the (R) anti-proton beam doesn’t look ANYTHING like the one created by my 1:350 working replica. Ugh! CBS(D), you messed up!

(oopsie… time to go take it outside for its breakfast. The neighbors are really p_ssed about it carving chunks out of their yards and damaging the engine blocks and body parts from their cars. They’ve repeatedly asked that I get a dog — even if it would take a poop in their gardens. But, the Tacoma police won’t come for some reason…heheheheh)

I do, seriously, miss the more ‘electric blue’ color of the main phasers. I don’t know whether this was a deliberate decision, or the result of a change from animation to CGI, or, what. A minor gripe.

An ADDITION to my second way of looking at this upgrade (#2)

I have also accepted that this long project and the effects team have NOT been given a Movie-style budget unfortunately, and that they are generally doing a great job given the circumstances… and that these visuals WILL BE this shows DEFINITIVE look in the future on next generation viewing mediums and for future viewers who have never seen the original shows production design ethic. I also like to believe that the new CGI effects will grow on me over time, and that the new angles etc. will eventually seem to have “lways been there”… At the end of the day, between having many updated Remastered episodes to look forward to, along with an upcoming Movie, and remastering of this site, it is a great time for Star Trek…so I will enjoy it all.

“Cloverfield” could be a pre production name for Trek.As I recall ,Lucasfilm called The Return of the Jedi “Blue Harvest” while it was being filmed to keep away prying eyes and curiosity seekers while it was being filmed.Film co.s do this when they feel a project will attract too much unwanted attension whilst in production.

This preview shows that the remastered project was worthwhile.

#68 Yeah, I thought about “Blue Harvest” too, but that was done with ROTJ because they were doing a lot of location shoots on that show. I don’t know if Trek XI is going that same route. Maybe…

But the report at Latino Review is pretty unambiguous- Abrams is NOT directing Trek XI, and is on a separate project. Assuming that is the case, then is he still on as a Producer and willthe script he developed be the one they use? When the trades issue their stories on these matters, I’ll be satisfied that the reports are accurate. And if this does play out the way its being reported, I find that very annoying given the vehement denials issued a week ago. Anthony, I give you credit for tracking many stories down in the past, but it sounds like you fell victim to a studio smokescreen (along with the rest of the online news community).

Definitely some good work here, very good work. Although, I have to be honest and say that I’m really not blown away by this whole project. I must say, I am disappointed in how readily everyone gobbles up eye candy. As I’ve said, I like the work CBS-D does, but it just doesn’t belong in the original series…it doesn’t really match the flair and color of the original effects. That’s why I prefer Daren’s approach. I know many of you think it looks fake, but in truth…it ‘looks’ like the original filming model, or as close as it could be in CGI anyway…and his style replicates the original effects, but gives them a little extra punch.

Some of the CBS-D team members do get it. The guy doing the matte paintings has the concept down completely. The simple word being, ‘enhance’…but I guess that’s why it’s called Trek Remastered…and Daren’s is called ‘Enhanced’. Oh well.

I maintain that CBS-D was the wrong choice for this work, they don’t have the subtlety to do this type of thing. That’s not saying their work sucks, it doesn’t, the work just belongs in a modern series..not a show from the 1960’s.

#65 I also miss the electric blue phasers of old. Where the old effect had a blue band as well, it had an electric white-hot core running through the center. Together it suggested some serious bad-ass energy was coming out of that ship. The new ones are ok, but plain blue bands don’t really convey the power of the ship like the old effect. Having said that, the preview looks absolutely incredible!! Can’t wait to re-visit this fav of mine on Saturday.

Holy Rigelian Bat Crap!!! CBS-D has done it!! This is going to be F’n amazing!! We’re actaully going to see the E following Deckers order and fire from point blank range… we’re going to see ships interacting with the rubble of the destroyed solar system… and it looks like we’re going to see an amazing shot of the shuttle launch and Decker’s final moments.

This episode is actually going to reflect what was originally concieved and written by the screen writer.

This is a dream come true. I cannot think of another TV show where overhauling dated SPFX would be worthwild or profitable. Star Trek fans are indeed lucky. I look forward to the rest of the series to be aired and HD. Perhaps the Doc’s version could be added as a bonus for the HD set.
As a side note, Generations in HD needs to replace the Warbird destruction taken from TUC with a new shot. And re-edit the crash landing.

But what does that mean “not off of Trek?” If he goes and directs a different movie while acting as producer on this one (which is what the Latino Review article reported) then that would be disappointing. I’m taking the wait-and-see approach because I cannot believe anything that’s being said by these reports on either side of the issue.

Oh Jeff, I wish you could see it too- the beauty of it is.. staggering.

The picture of the Constellation under the E is my background, but I find myself staring into the nacelles and wondering how they got real Christmas lights into a CG model.

Amazing.

I just say wow, wow and wow!

Spock only says, “it will go through the most densely populated section of our galaxy.” So the preview announcer is taking some liberties.

It looks like we won’t be disappointed. The effects may not be feature-quality for 2007 but they’re very good and definitely more exciting than the original. Not all TOS episodes depend on effects but this one does and there was plenty of room for improvement in the original. The fact that every CG artist whose ever proposed a TOS SE used this episode for their demo says something.

Looking forward to the DD version too.

I wonder why they say in the preview narration..”it’s headed toward earth”, it was actually headed toward Rigel.

Nice to see they actually added some damage to the bridge area on the Constellation! In the original, they always said the main bridge was completely unihabitable, and yet there wasn’t a scratch on it in the original model. This is nice… it reminds me of the death of Big E in ST:III, when you could see the internal stucture as the main hull plating collapsed.

From the preview, I think that all of the non-DM shots are absolutely fantastic.

I’ll hold off final judgement on the DM itself… but in all honesty, I was never a big fan of the original “horn of plenty” effect, so the fact that they’re sticking with that design probably means that I won’t be crazy about the CGI version. Not their fault, since that’s been their mantra all along.

How would people have felt about any alternative designs for the machine? I don’t know of the authenticity of this image, but these are supposedly design concepts compared to the ultimate effect. I would be interested in the possibilities of the two on the upper right:

Well I’ve been waiting for this episode since they first anounced the remastered fx’s, but I have to admit I agree with the criticism of the surface of the Doomsday Machine.

No I for one do like the idea that the original surface of the machine has been obliterated from eons of bombardment in space, but I’m not seeing that from the admittedly low-rez video.

Speaking as someone who does 3D modelling/texturing for a living, I think what people are maybe noticing is not the texture itself but that the surface detail is ‘too big’ for an object that large. The Doomsday Machine feels like a traditional fx model of less than 12 inches, not this thing the size of a small moon. Now maybe there is small scale subtle detail that’s not coming through in the preview video, but if not then you’ll have to add me to the unimpressed list.

Having said that, I am still really excited about this episode as the space battle scenes will be much more dynamic than the original.

John N., the upper right-hand image is illustrator Bruce Jensen’s planet killer. I’m intimately familiar with that model; it was going to be the basis for my own (now-dormant) Doomsday Machine project. The other planet killer idea you pointed out (the one that looks like whale bones) was done by an artist named “Angelo”. Very little is known about this particular design, although there is a video of it firing its antiproton beam that is floating around the ‘net (Dennis Bailey has a copy, IIRC).

I’ve taken a peek at your TMD project in the past and thought that it was great! How far did you get with the DM itself? I only recall seeing images of the Enterprise and the Constellation… I’d love to see the model for the DM if you made any progress on it…

#87–Norman Spinrad was never very happy with the original design of the DM either, and has publicly stated more than once he’d be happy if it got redesigned for an upgrade. He also wasn’t very happy with Gene Coon’s rewrites of his script, but (unlike Harlan Ellison) he’s become fond of the episode anyway in the years since.

Scott Gammans–since Daren’s efforts are those that get most of the attention, let me just say how much I enjoyed looking at what you’d accomplished–particularly your idea of making the Constellation an older-model ship, which CBS would have done well to emulate. I’d particularly like to know how you got that “glowing hot” look for your space rubble, as I’d planned something similar for a non-Trek project of my own.

I think the CBS work looks great, and as someone here said, it should be a real popcorn-fest this weekend.

#87: It’s great to see all those different interpretations of the Planet Killer. I love the upper right image because it’s so different from the original. Still, I prefer the CBS-D version. It’s more realistic than the original, but still has a weird alien quality to it.

Because undoubtedly some people want every single episode of Star Trek to deal with some massive threat that means the end of the Earth and features humans battling *anything* to *protect* humans.

Although it’s irksome and revisionist, at least the dialogue itself wasn’t changed (I think…)

Does anyone know where you can get your hands on the original scripts for episodes like this?

I would be curious to read how the effects as described in the original script would ultimately compare to what appeared on the screen.

I’ve watched the DD preview about 50 times and am really getting the rush for the episode to air. For those criticizing the low pass over the DDM… keep in mind that Decker said to take the enterprise to “point blank range” so we’re going to see the surface very close…

It looks ridiculous.

Doesn’t fit in with the original footage. They should leave well-enough alone. It’s like trying to paint new clothes on the Mona Lisa.

This is un-frigging-believable. I can’t stop watching the preview. It’s awesome. It’s even better then I could have imagined. The Constellation looks like its been through hell and back. One of the nacelles looks like it took a direct hit and exploded into splinters. The asteroid smashing against its hull. Oh God!. And the DDM looks tremendous. Its huge, powerful and ancient looking. CBS-D has done some awesome work with this episode. Unfortunately I have to wait until 3am Monday morning to see it. Everyone else will have already taped and watched it a zillion times. DAMN!

You can also download some of the remastered episodes on Xbox Live on an Xbox 360. I wish I knew what they’re planning on doing with the ones released past the point of putting the initial wave up there.

I’d buy Doomsday (again) in a heartbeat, since they’re uncut episodes, unlike the syndication.

How ironic that TNG’s fx now look horribly dated by comparison.
We’re getting to see classic Trek scenes we only could imagine years ago. Way to go CBS-D.

I really like the work they’ve done here…but man, it doesn’t match the style of the series at all. It’s like they’ve given up on trying to capture the 60’s look and have resigned themselves to going contemporary. That’s fine for capturing new main stream viewers who don’t appreciate the classic ‘retro’ look, but the fact that so many are drooling over this trailer leaves me dumb founded. I guess it just comes down to not being impressed by eye candy over artistic integrity. All my friends loved the last three Star Wars pics…said they were AWESOME, for much the same reason as this…the effects were “AMAZING”. Well, at least classic Trek has good stories, unlike those three steaming piles of dung I just mentioned. In the end, I guess it just comes down to pleasing the masses.

I’ll never be mainstream if I can’t like contemporary style pasted into a 60’s T.V. show.

Holy Crap! So the Eye of Sauron ended up in the Doomsday Machine?!

Overall, it looks good. Not 100 percent sold on the surface treatment of TDM, but will reserve judgment until seeing the final version as broadcast. I prefer Daren’s more colorful, semitransparent look, but again, its too early to reach a verdict on either one.

This remastered episode may be the one that “wins over” many TOS fans that were originally against this project.

In my opinion, these screenshots and video show quite an improvement over the original effects, especially the damaged Constellation. Wow!

The new FX for episodes will always cause polarised opinions, especially in the case of this one.

CBS-D’s version looks ancient and metallic, Daren’s looks ancient and translucent. The original looked like it was made of rock, to me.

Ho hum. No one can win on stories like this. I just look forward to seeing what they come up with!

If you’ve ever seen interviews with Windom. He mostly says that he doesn’t know what all the fuss was about. He came in was allowed to chew up the scenery for ten minutes then they used what they needed for the episode. He doesn’t look at this episode as his greatest work. Which is a ashame. I thought he really pulled it off.

I just want to point out that anyone buying an HDTV and expecting to see crystal-clear images when watching Star Trek Remastered is going to be in for a heckuva disappointment. To my knowledge, no station in the country is broadcasting these syndicated episodes in high definition yet… it’s all blurry standard definition.

No one is going to see the CBS Digital version of “Doomsday” in high definition until the episode becomes available on XBOX or HD-DVD later this year.

IT NEEDS MORE WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU GUYS AT CBS DIGITAL HAVE A GREAT LOOKING PRE-FINAL LOOK TO EVERYTHING. PLEASE TELL ME YOU WILL FINE TUNE THESE RE-MASTERED EFFECTS SHOTS BEFORE THEY GET ON HD-DVD/BLUE-RAY. #141 — It’s not that bad, my local affiliate’s digital TV broadcast still looks mighty good and certainly better then the analog broadcast. Viewing the digital feed is the only way to go even if it is only SD upconverted to HD.

That’s absolutely correct. Even on my HDTV, the broadcast eps don’t look all that hot. Especially when compared to the screenshots posted here.

Actually, I think the way Leonard Nimoy delivers the line “You will carry out my last order, Mr. Sulu” is brilliant. You can sense the repressed rage underneath the cool facade. It’s as subtle as William Windom is over-the-top.

Jarring, like this use of upper caps, but I agree with what you’re saying.

It’s the type of project where you should either 1. go all out and do everything, or 2. take the stylized artistic approach and simply enhance the original effects so the new material isn’t jarring. Realistically, CBS-D doesn’t have the time, money or manpower to do number 1…so they should have attempted number 2. What we’re left with, is this strange hybrid of TOS. I wish I could get inside the heads of those in charge…I really can’t understand this bombastic approach.

It’s probably that prequels didn’t come into fashion until the last few years.

#145 no one is saying they are broadcast in HD.

I’ve never said TOS was in HD, what I said was the digital TV broadcast provides a clean version devoid of normal analog signal issues. My local syndicator is the CW station here, the CW delivers content in 1080i, to make things easy on the wide variety of HDTV receivers around all of the content broadcast is converted to 1080i. So what I get is the 480i digital feed my CW station gets untouched by analog equipment and then upconverted to 1080i to keep a consistant signal format. This is how all stations do it.

So no, it is not in HD, it is however in a clean digital format. Further, just like how you can get an upscaling DVD player and make DVDs look pretty darn good on an HDTV, the same thing is happening here. TOS Remastered is being made at 1080p. That inherent detail is then filtered down to a 480i master for syndication. The detail from the 1080 source is somewhat preserved, just like taking a large image in Photoshop and resizing it, you still retain quite a bit of detail from the original.

The screenshots posted here, that you just gave kudos to, are captured by me from the very brodcast I described above. So there is indeed a benefit to watching it on the HD feed of your local broadcaster. But you can just imagine what these episodes will look like when actually broadcast at a proper HD resolution and/or when the HD DVD set comes out.

Holy crap! This looks pretty awsome! I know the TDM looks more metallic than the original but certainly more detail. It looks like it has been out in space for a looooong time! I know some folks do not like the lack of color in the shots. I for one believe it matches the mood of this episode and puts the doom in doomsday. Now for the Connie….it totally rocks! I love the asteroids banging off the hull and breaking up. Great touch.

DarenDoc, I still think your work is awsome and I cannot wait to see your hard work come into fruition. I was wondering if you considered, in a future venture, taking the remastered scenes (non CGI) and subbing your CGI. That would be the ultimate trek IMHO.

LOL. If they are mad, it’s only because we’ve driven them there. I myself am always moaning when they change something in ways I didn’t feel appropriate, then go off on a rant when they DON’T change something I thought they should have.

But in fairness, if they took the tack of New Horizon’s suggestion of basic upgrades (which is what they did in “Balance of Terror” more or less) the reaction would have been eventually a collective yawn.

A different crew would have come up with a totally different set of changes and tactics, but by and large, CBS-D is doing a pretty good job of mixing it up, and giving us some great stuff.

Except that Planet Killer surface. Seriously, change that.

Fantastic - what do people think of the Phasers though? They look a little… ‘empty’ like they have no substance just rotocoped blue lines… does anyone think this was intentional - or they just thought it looked OK?

Look, I know it’s a “preview”, but the shot of the Enterprise flying close to the Doomsday Machine’s surface looks pretty “jaggy” or “gamey”.

Is it me, or does anyone see Daren Doc’s influence?

But, all in all, great fun for the money! Glad we’ll see Daren’s stuff too.

I’m buying it for when it is shown, for the larger screen size (32 vs 26 when measured in a letterbox format), the ability to watch my 800 disk collection on the (currently, one, but soon) 2 DVD jukeboxes on a larger screen, and because the BS I take at work needs a good toy to make it all worthwhile.

I’ve seen it live. Even non-HD inputs look pretty darned good on this set –with a chip that Samsung has installed.

It looks great! I just hope my local affiliate (WPXI) doesn’t butcher this episode like they did last week w/ JTB. That episode they compressed down to show school closings, & other traffic info. I was so pissed. I n other episodes they have run crawls at the bottom of the screen too. I can’t wait to see all of the episodes uncut, w/o commercials, in HD, & without all of the network B.S.

#142, I agree w/ you on the viewscreens (though you didn’t have to shout it ). I’ve been saying since they before they started this project that I wish they would do something w/ them. They wouldn’t have to be done all the time, just once in awhile to let people know they are in fact viewscreens and not windows or pictures.

*sigh* however the people in charge decided at the start of this project that they didn’t like the way that it would look… not that they’d probably have the time and resources to do anyway. If they couldn’t fix the screens in WNMHGB then they certainly can’t add extras into the screens of other episodes.

Does anyone know who handles digital cable episode descriptions? I’d like to contact them, especially concerning a fantastic episode like this. Does the cable company get their info from the network affiliate, or Paramount? They always say nothing about the episodes being remastered. They just state “Repeat”. I think they’d peak some more interest if they let it be known.

Something I just noticed.

At a point near 0:04, there’s the shot of the DDM turning towards the E, and there’s an image of Sulu turning towards the camera…

…The very end of the warp nacelles are visible on either edge of the viewscreen. That’s a new POV for the planet-killer towards the stern of the Enterprise, isn’t it?

While Windom is great and definitely sells the character, it’s Nimoy’s performance as Spock that makes the episode. Specifically, the way Spock handles the Commodore flying off the handle in the middle of a very dire situation is perfect. Strong, respectful, and absolutely competent. This more than any other episode shows that Spock’s the guy you want to have around in a crisis.

Now, for those who sometimes say that the CG effects look like “videogames” or that they’re too “cartoony:” the link above is what a cartoon looks like.

Scratch that - it’s what a *bad* cartoon looks like.

This is the first I’ve seen of this all I can say is….COOL. About time too.. Man that music from that episode is going to be with me for awhile now. I felt the music in this episode was excellent.

The biggest problem I have is where my syndicated channel Star Trek appears and chops these episodes to death as well. I might have to invest into the new DVD’s when they come out.

My only rough criticism is about the Constellation so far . Looks like a garbage scow lol I think its the detail to the model thats bothering me, The bridge looks intact when in Spock’s dialogue he says the Constellations bridge was damaged. It was a opportunity to make the hull scarring into the ships bridge. The rock hitting the Constellation was a nice touch though. I’m not sure about the Doomsday machine itself yet. My opinion can pretty much change when the episode airs.

yeah yeah its a sensless nitpick . I’m very thankful the f/x are much better than what the fan film series “New Voyages” did to the Doomsday Machine. I like the progress the CBS-Digital team has made..

After this it leaves on my MUST SEE no matter what remastered viewing list “The Enterprise Incident, The Ultimate Computer, the Tholian Web, and the already aired Space Seed” *sighs happily* Yeah I’ll watch the others but im not as excited until I see some previews.

Point made, but in all fairness the phaser effects for the original “Doomsday” were amongst the very worst in the entire series’ run. Happy as I am with much of the remastered work seen so far here today, I have to agree that the phaser shots look pretty weak–maybe it’s a stylistic choice to show how ineffectual the Starfleet weapons are under these circumstances, but the look is still pretty bland. The posters are correct in asserting that the original FX artists managed better; they just didn’t do it in this particular episode.

Judging by the 99.9% positive response to what CBS-D has accomplished with this episode, it would seem that this level generosity is what’s been wanted all along. Now we have a DDM made fresh and new and exciting again! Many other episodes are equally worthy of equally generous enhancement (even if they don’t take place out in space).

I wonder; has anyone out there made note of any additional enhancements to be found on the full-length remastered episodes available at i-tunes? Does the Gorn blink a fourth time? Did they enhance the disintegration effect of that bum character from City on the Edge who accidentally overloads the phaser?

I don’t like watching these episodes on my little computer monitor, and besides, my computer doesn’t play those i-tunes files all that well. Does any one out there know how to transfer those i-tunes files onto a DVD in such a way that they’ll play on a regular DVD player?

All I can say is I’m staying up late to watch this one, *and* taping it on the DVR! I first watched the preview last night and was blown away. “Oh my god oh my god oh my god …” is right! This is a real event. I look forward to seeing both versions, too.

I’ve watched TOS for nearly all my 40 years, but I’ll admit many of the shows have faded in memory as life got busier. Star Trek Remastered has made them all new again. It’s great to watch my favorite crew without the distractions of badly-dated effects. And the big E . . . I always preferred the movie upgrade, but now I appreciate how grand her original design was. It’s just nice to be excited about Star Trek again. Thanks to CBS-Digital and to TrekMovie.com.

Much gratitude to all involved. The Doomsday Machine is my number 1 favorite episode. As a young one in the 1960’s, I was truly enamored by the original effects when I first saw the episode. To this day, I can still suspend disbelief and enjoy the episode in its entirety. This is the way it is! The phasers in “Exeter” aren’t my work, though - they’re an effect Jimm adds after rendering, I believe using Photoshop. The photon torpedoes we use in one shot are mine.

And it’s our intention with “Exeter” to emulate the effects on TOS as closely as possible, with a couple of caveats (no point in adding matte lines, for instance) - not to update them as the TOS-R folks are doing. You’ll notice, for example, that the Exeter’s impulse engines are never lit up - because the Enterprise’s never were on TOS.

Different goals, different choices.

Yup, I’ve had my copy of the final draft script from Lincoln Enterprises (known as Star Trek Enterprises back then) since the early 1970’s. The price now is exactly the same as when I bought it back then! It was well worth the purchase. The Doomsday Machine was such a favorite of mine that as a teenager I cast my younger brothers and sisters to play the various parts in the script and perform it as a play in our parents’ living room.

Not much detail is given as to what the effects should look like, basically lines like “Ext: Enterprise fires phasers”.

Well, Captain Garrovick hasn’t explicitly asked for impulse power yet.

I think I have narrowed it down to what I like and don’t like about the ship’s phasers..

The original effect…not always, but many times, looked great because the phaser beam had a bit of a “glow” along the core of the beam..

But all in all, at least it hasn’t been modified to look like a water hose squirting orange water. And to stay somewhat on topic, the banged up metallic look of the ancient neutronium hull of the Doomsday machine looks fantastic…can’t wait.

And may I say that you do so, sir, and brilliantly. I’ll assume that CBS and “Max Rem” over at STNV are capable of this as well–but the truth is that for whatever reason, you’re the only ones to do it. It’s like it’s1968 all over again, only without the matte lines. Even Daren Dochterman isn’t going for a look that has so much fidelity to the original.

Exactly. And CBS-D’s choice to go with a somewhat updated approach is no less valid than any other. I don’t agree with some of what they’ve done, but in the case of most of the shows I think their FX cuts with the older footage just fine.

I have to say, I have a lot of admiration for whoever is putting the actual previews together…

They’re able to take episodes we’ve no doubt all seen countless times and make each one seem (to me, at least) like an exciting new hour of action-adventure television.

Colour me impressed, on all counts.

The effects are getting better all of the time, and I just read at hobbytalk, that someone is making a 1/350th kit, that can be made into any of the Constitution class ships! Just can’t wait till the kit comes out and I can start making my 1/350th Fleet!

I too am on the colorful neutronium bandwagon but will reserve judgement until I see it in action. Looks kinda glossy and translucent in the preview. The E and the C look awesome. I can’t wait!

I believe that I recall a comment from the (R) team that they were attempting a surface texture (or lack thereof) that was suggestive of the hull/shell of planet-killer being blasted over and over again — half-slagged by weapons fire over an extensive period of time (inferring a variety of alien races have had it come ‘visit’ their home system or territory).

The one thing I noticed about the remastered Doomsday Machine is the anti proton weapon. It looks less like a “force beam” that Decker described and more like a mass of lava or something. It almost looks like an extension of the glowing mass within the machine itself. The new effect does look a lot more formidable.

Someone once described the doomsday machine as a flying terd with an attitude.

Re: Phasers: I think the less-hot beam center of the CBS phasers is due in some part to the transfer- all of their fx shots have been flat. Compare to how the stuff looks on iTunes and you’ll see the difference. BUT I don’t think they’ve gotten the right color blue down yet. As far as the sound goes, if they EVER start using that cheesy TNG phaser sound on these eps, I’ll boycott ‘em. The look and sound of THOSE phasers always sucked- EXCEPT for in “Insurrection.” In that film, the TNG phasers looked and sounded hotter and far nastier. Do compare and see.

Sure looks like it. Anyone?

Some of the shots look nice, others…not so much. Most of the shots of the ships look good, but there’s even some weird animation on the Enterprise as it changes direction, that simulates more poor camera shooting of a model than good 3D animation. Some of the shots do look like cheap CG. But then again, they don’t have a good budget or good time, so I can’t blame them. The banged up ship does look good.

Look at all these messages. I can’t believe no one complained that the planet killer smashed the Consitution’s off-set bridge turbolift!

It was all worth it to read #1 Josh’s comment… stunned beyond words (well 2 words.).

Regarding the appearance of the Doomsday Machine and the weapon it fires as being potentially dodgy,

my question is this, who in here knows what solid “neutronium” or “anti-protons” even look like??

After reading 200 plus comments (some more than once), I am eager for the Doomsday Machine to blast ME. Information overload.

This is by far my favorite Trek story (including all series and all movies). William Windom gives the BEST PERFORMANCE EVER in the whole Star Trek Universe (yes - better than Khan). I especially love this scene:

Kirk: Where’s your crew?
Decker: On the third planet.
Kirk: There is no third planet!
Decker [holding back tears]: Don’t you think I know that… [beat] There was, but not anymore!

The manner in which Windom delivers that last line gives me goosebumps every time I see this (which is about 75 times). He says that last line so matter-of-factly and almost flippantly, that the enormity of the tradgedy hits the audience like a ton of bricks.

I can’t wait to see it Re-mastered.

Windom’s performance in the New Voyages episode before last was brief but stunningly good. Hope the cast was taking notes. (I kid…….. sort of.)
Now what’s the deal with the size of those damn nacelle balls…?

Yes Orb you talk about the holy grail of Studio miniatures, most photos are extremely dated and the color is washed.
I know DS9 went back to the Green K’tingas but they lacked the paint jobs of the first film, I don’t understand why the K’tinga has been so neglected over the years, it’s easily just as iconic a design as the Enterprise.

I know it’s Green and Tan/beige, but that’s about it. On DVD and T.V. it looks grey but, the green makes it appear far more alien and warlike for some reason.

Were there any photos of the k’tinga from the Christies auction?

I first saw The Doomsday Machine when it aired 10/20/1967 at age 9. This is my all-time favorite! I have enjoyed the other series and movies, but nothing comes close to this and the other best TOS episodes, in terms of originality, vision and message. I wondered for years what The Doomsday Machine would be like with modern special effects - the previews and stills look fantastic and I await tomorrow’s airing with both excitement and anticipation. I look forward buying it on I-tunes so that I can enjoy it uncut! Perhaps, CBS will consider making a 5 minute or so prequel that starts at stardate 4202.1, when Decker records his log.
so we can witness the Constellation’s encounter with the planet killer and the destruction of planet #3 in star system L-374 (maybe for the DVD release ?!) Everyone -enjoy the best of TOS.

Jesus this sucks. What are you people looking at? What doesn’t look like an animatic demo in the fx shots? Have you seen a good special effect oh like Say in Star Trek X where the Enterprise E is seperating from the Romunan ship? Now that’s an effect. Trek has never looked sillier than it does now with these new effects. It’s an idea that has some merit but every time each fx shot looks funnier than the original. I want this project to work, but dammit Jim I can’t take it.

The version I saw on channel 50 Santa Rosa had two changes to Dekkers lines. He challenged Spocks authority to releive him and Spock tells him that Vulcans never bluff - which he follows with “I don’t suppose they do.”

Kick also tells him when he’s in the Shuttle that no one expects him to die for a mistake and judgment and he replies with “you siad so yourself,,,”

Both added to the story more so than 50 more seconds of 2 year old special effects..

I agree with much of what Kevin (#229) said.

I was REALLY happy with the E and Constellation. I was reasonably happy with the DDM until I saw Darren’s (Damn, I wish I could do stuff like that, I can’t even draw a stick figure). Darren’s “fire” was much more appealing than the CBS version and the skin of the DDM looked much better IMHO…

Still, I couldn’t help but keep yelling WTF when they cut so much more out. Some of the lines no longer made sense. It already looked like they used the 70’s “reduced runtime” versions of the episodes but now they cut even more out. Will we ever see the original full length versions like they had on SCIFI a few years back? Not even the DVD releases are original length…

I don’t have access to i-prunes so can someone tell me are the remastered episodes there full length or at least as long as the 70’s versions?

Still happy to see this redone. This was always my favourite episode.

Hell yeah! The Doomsday Machine was very well done! The level of detail you guys gave the Constellation was astounding! The Planet Killer Enterprise battle was awesome. I like how you had the Enterprise straffing it’s much larger foe. The final “Poison Pill” scene with the crippled Constellation delievering the death blow to the Planet Killer was superb! My complements on your work, this was a Doomsday Machine fan’s dream. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for “The Ultimate Computer”.

Wow. This is worse than when they started colorizing black and white movies.
Just…does not look right. A 1960’s show with passable late 1990’s special effects tacked on. Just horrible.
I’m not against fixing actual flubs in re-mastering, but the CGI stuff is just jarring, weird, and in my opinion nowhere as cool as the old stuff.
And it will not age as well as the original, at all, I guarantee that in 2 years this will be hard not to cringe at.
